Sorry people I know this one has been done too death:) . But I have finally got around to painting my dashboard bit\'s, after sanding them down nicely. I have a couple of questions, is it best to apply a primer first?. If so should the primer be suitable for plastics?, regards flexing/cracking issues.

Or should I just go for the main top coat colour first?. Also where would the best place be to buy the paint\'s that I need, should I just go to the nearest Halfords or look at proper paint suppliers?. Just out of interest as well how many coats of laquer should I apply, or is it just down to personal choice?.

Hope somebody can help me out many thanks..........Leigh.

I would apply a primer and put at least 2 or 3 coats of laquer on , halfords should have all you need they sell dash paint.

If I am doing anything like this I always spray a test peice in this case I would use a piece of plastic and put primer on , paint then laquer then you get an idea of what your going to end up with rather than trial and error with your dash parts.

Definitley apply primer, get the one for plastics.

I\'d apply one coat primer, then wet and dry with a 1200, dust down, then 2nd coat of primer.

Then 1200 again, then repeat with your main colour until you\'ve built up a good coat.

It goes like this. Sand, primer, sand, primer, sand, primer, sand, primer, sand, colour, sand, colour, sand, colour, sand, colour laquer. I used 1200grit sand paper to sand. I never used laquer. Use acrylic primer and acrylic paint so it flexes with the plastic

I would suggest a decent plastic Adhesion promoter (keep your eyes open for Upol Plastex no2 its really good) goes on before the primer and it sticks really well.

as robbie says its all about the prep. Try not to rush it (put too much on too fast) and make sure its dry between flats.

There is nothing wrong with Halfords Aerosols just steer away from the realy cheap ones and turn the can upside down and spray through to clear the nozzle when your going to leave it to dry for a bit (Can\'s nozzles get clogged up and will start spitting which is really irritating)
