Evo5!?! 170MPH!?! What was done to it? If your clock is fairly accurate you should be proud that you beat such a powerful Evo. What mods have you done to the car already?

I think the old speedo is fibbing, Evo 5 will only do around a genuine 143mph. Unless they have changed the gearing/fitted really big wheels/giving the enigne an extra 1000 or more rpm rev range (which would mean it wold be heding towards a 9000rpm red line - not sur if the old 4G63 would stand that much).

nice driving on a private road there rob ;)

I also on a private road tested mine out, the speedo went of the clock as its quite far out the faster you go, and i had the commander set to record speed, it showed 168mph and still had a bit more in it but was a little wet and approaching a curve in the private road so let off.

I think mines running around 400bhp @ fly on twins

my speedo wasnt working wen i had a blat with a r1, revs in 5th were 7100rpm aint got a clue but it was hardon material! lol

plus no speedo is accurate, ne1 can say o yea ive done 175 when really it was 155!
if u can state that ure fd will do over 170mph then i wanna c u go through a fixed camera as they recon it wont clock u over 173mph ish!
my old evo 4 would only do 150 so unless the evo 5 had sum serious power 143 sounds rite!

hehe makes it more fun :Laugh

i raced a evo4 or 5 and he kept backing off or running out of puff around 140 so would not go anymore over at all.

the gap from 100 up was huge the fd just goes and goes :D

Unless you\'re running stock wheels that\'s not going to be accurate by a decent margin unfortunately.

GPS (if you\'re at a constant speed) or a proper beam based timing setup is the ouly real way to measure top speed...

My speedo is quite a way out at high speeds.  Was readying well north of 180 (i.e. off the scale) when I clocked 173mph through timing beams at Bruntingthorp.  Was pretty okay but going much faster will require diff/gearing changes.

It took something in the order of 100bhp increase to take the car from 154 to 173 in the same distance!  Looking to break 180 later this year but cooling and diff need sorting before then.

It\'s not great to be hitting the rev limiter in 5th under that kind of load condition :)

From what i gather the rotary is suspect when doing top speed runs thus will prob never find out what the top end is in mine :Nono!

i\'ll get a sat nav recording tonight as people have said the standard speed o  becomes a bit out at certain speeds the evo was running about 400 bhp remember though they loose a lot of bhp through the transmission, about 100 bhp in some. Anyway can the apexi commander be relied on for more accurate reading? i have noticed there is differences between the apexi and standard speedo.

The apexi seems more accurate, but still not the same reading as the GPS. I did 167mph with basic mods (on a German de-restricted road:) ). The clock showed 178 and I\'m pretty sure the Apexi was between those two readings. Odd. I\'d be happy if I beat a 400bhp evo in my RX7.

Very true...

Obvious if you think about it though - at high speed you\'re putting it under the most load you can - huge air resistance and you\'re heading towards max rpm.

You\'re in a part of the map that is probably nerver touched except at speeds north of 160mph and most tuners don\'t have the resources to sort out or mimic on the dyno or road.

Temps are likely to be high and airflow/pressures under the bonnet are going to be doing slightly odd things.

I lost my last engine under these circumstances (chipped a tip) so the new engine is built and mapped with this in mind :)

I remember reading thats why people where changing to a faster acting temp sensor. Those speeds are darn quick though!
