hi folks. just got my rx7 type r last weekend. the turbos were blown when i got it but it came with two other turbos. i was going to fit them just to check that the engine is ok, but after removing the turbos and checking the price of gaskets its seems a lot of work and money just to take one wee run. as want to go the single turbo route. could you guys tell me what is involved in doing the conversion. also how do these cars feel with a big turbo? the car will be mainly used on twisty country roads and the occasional 1/4 mile drag. so dont want something to laggy. also front mount or v-mount?

thanks for any info you can give me.

have used fmic/charge cooler and v mount and v mount is def best all round option
good airflow to both rad and icooler even better with vented bonnet
gt35/40 is prob best bet for low lag but good potential and easilly capable of 500fwhp with supporting mods
but the crux of the matter is cost
v mount set up 1500
turbo kit          2000
fuelling             500
mapping           300
apexi               500
frightening and this wld be on the cautious side
i would stick with the twins unless u have a problem with turbos ans do other bits first as v mount can be altered later for single fuelling and mapping could be done now but it the turbo downpipe wastegate and manifold that is going to cost the most

If your planning to do the conversion yourself then it\'s easily managable on a fairly resonable budget. I managed to rebuld mine and go single all at  the same time for less than 4k.
Gt35R from australia- £800
Manifold from ebay- £100
Apexi from JPS on ebay £400
Kg parts fuel rail, FPR &1680 inj -£300
2nd hand blitz front mount £300

thanks for getting back to me guys. i will be doing the conversion myself. i already have a t78 in the garage but now thinking i want a ball bearing and had thought of the gt35r as my mate is running that turbo on his gt4 and it feels good. the car is going to be a project and only doing stuff when i can afford it. the car is off the road and will stay off the road untill it is the way i want it. think i want to go the v-mount way with one of those koyo rads from ebay. are these suitable for doing the v-mount with? my mate is real good at mapping he has done loads of high power cars so am happy to get him to do that. i dont know to much about these engines as it has been gt4s i have had in the past so still trying to learn about it. is there anything internaly that would need to be upgraded to handle the extra power? also what engine oil would you recommend using? i used magnatec 10w 40 in the celica and the guy i bought the rx from said thats what he used in it. does that sound about right to yous?
thank again

For internal mods, you could get the engine ported (different types from mild to extreme) whilst it is getting a rebuild. This will allow quicker spooling times for turbos and keep the power band climbing all the way to redline (stock ports run out of puff after 6.8k)

Be careful when mapping as mapping a piston engine is VERY different to mapping a rotary

when you say about engine porting is this just like porting and polishing like any other engine? yeah i know and have spoke about it and he know about how the timing is different. to be honest i dont know much about mapping but i do know that paul knows his stuff he will read up about it first he wouldnt do it if he wasnt sure as he has work had to get a good name for himself. dont know if any of you guys have heard of him mainly known for his orange celica gt4 st205 its had a few mag features. i did the body work on it. my claim to fame.:D
