Maybe a old alarm/immobiliser  has activated,

You havent taken the battery off recently ?

Could be a faulty ignition switch.

This used to happen all the time on my old golf. So much so that i used to have to open the bonnet almost every time to start the bloody thing.
Turned out a heat shield was missing and the starter was getting too hot & sticking, the added voltage added when running straight to the battery would usually unstick it.

Old golfs, had a problem with ignition switch being faulty :)

Could just be a dodgy relay...Is there a same relay you can swap round just to check?
Montego Blue 94 R2 FD3S... Bling not included.

Well.. maybe you\'ve hit a speed bump and cut the starter motor wire under the car. It runs under the car on the passengers side like 2 inches behind the sill... check if the wire is still in one piece :)... but then again.. if you could do it by live feed it shouldn\'t be the case, but who knows, its worth a check :)
