Is this possible to happen to a turbo from a 2 year old car?

Sorry its not a rotary, its a touran 2002 1.9 TDI, but I guess most of you know about turbos so I hope you could help.

Well... I was looking at my friends car the other day and noticed under throttle the intercooler pipe *from engine to intercooler* would narrow itself until it managed to close itself under revs. From my understanding this means there is a blockage somewhere from the intercooler onwards. Another mechanic confirmed this to him after, but he was not convinced.

Anyway he went to a third mechanic.. and in my opinion they came across to me as very dodgy... without doing anything, he said "the turbo is gone" and pretended to put his hand in the turbo... and said that it wasn\'t spinning...

He was obviously lying.. because the turbo has piping all on it and its not possible to do that without removing anything... and he didn\'t remove anything.

Anyway, my friend decided to chose that mechanic over me and the first mechanics analysis.... (oh well, his loss)

Now I\'m not sure if its true or not but I don\'t believe the turbo has gone bad and that the guy who said it had, is just trying to make money.

Anyway the mechanic has taken out the turbo and given this to my friend...

Apperantly the shaft was bent and has been bent back from the pictures above.

Any ideas.. did my friend get ripped off? I think the guy probably faked the turbo to be his as my friend wasn\'t there when he "took it out"... is it also possible the mechanic damaged it himself.?

Somehow I don\'t believe this happened.. I\'m almost 100% sure I could hear the turbo wine just the car kept choking itself under revs because lack of air flow... from the pictures above, this shows the turbo would have been seased, as from what I was told, the shaft was bent as well.

What do you think?

For the blades to be all mishapen like that it looks like someone took a hammer or pliers to it and mawled the thing.

I am sure you would have heard a failure like this - it must have sounded like a bag of bolts in a washing machine on fast spin :eek :eek :spank

That looks pretty grubby as well - is this the blade from the compressor or the one from the exhaust turbine? - it looks pretty old and dirty.  The compressor blade will never look that filthy - so assuming it\'s the exhaust side - did half his engine come out and hit it ? :spank

Could be someone wanting to get a free turbo and some business...

Definately some kind of foriegn body damage - but it was time ago judging by the soot build up, nothing is bright enough for it to have been recent.

Thanks for your help everyone so far.. I\'m still convinced there is something dodgy going on... and hes trying to charge my friend 1200 for the turbo to be changed.. o__O; might as well stick a mega size turbo on it for that price lol.

Could he have created some type of soot onto it? lol? I was thinking the same thing unless he swapped the turbo with one from an old car?

I believe this isn\'t the exhaust side as it has a flat plate on the bottom of it ( I wasn\'t told, was not there to check) .. and the engine didn\'t jump at it as far as I\'m aware... :P

What could cause this type of damage apart from the engine going through it LOL... someone put a screw in the intercooler pipes?
