Is there anything I can easily do to make the engine removal easier. IE ... remove anything from the block while it\'s still in the engine bay?? Obviously I can straight away take off the filters, IC etc, etc.

I\'ll be transferring all from one block to another anyway.

Or is it simply easier to disconnect everything, hoses etc, etc, plugs etc, gearbox, exhaust, mounts and lift out? (or something like that right?.. lol)

Is there anything I should be aware of for attacking this sort of job that someone has come across before?

Any advice greatfully received.

Obviously I will be taking my time and taking loads of pics.

This job is much easier if the car is on ramps or the front of the car is quite high up in the air.

Disconnect the plugs from the ecu and pull them through to the engine bay. I found this quite fiddly. There is a plug right up behind the glovebox that you can\'t even see. Disconect it and the whole lot should pull through to the engine bay.

To get the power sterring pump pulley off, it\'s best to leave the tensioned belt on and take it off with an impact wrench. It\'s only bakerlight material and can break really easy. You\'ll find the bolts holding this unit on behind the pulley. Tie it to one side and remove the bolts for the a/c unit below but dont remove the pulley on this.

Unclip the oil cooler pipes. These have C clips. Just pull the clips out  and pull the 2 halves apart.

Unbolt the 2 engine mount nuts on the back of the subframe.

Unbolt the downpipe from the cat

Unclip all the electrical connections from the gearbox

Remove the starter motor and the bolts holding the gearbox to the engine. The 2 top bolts are pretty hard to get to.

Remove the little square plate on the bottom of the gearbox.

Now you can either remove the bolts holding the pressure plate to the flywheel. Get a mate to use a socket on the front main pulley whilst he turns the engine over, you undo the nuts on the flywheel through the inspection plate you removed or....... use a large flat screwdriver and lever the center of the clutch towards the front of the engine. I tried the levering method and couldn\'t get them seperated so i unbolted the pressure plate instead..much easier imo

The engine is now ready to lift out. Definitley best to get a couple mates to help at this stage. one mate to guide the downpipe out and 2 of you to actally pull the engine clear of the car

Don\'t forget to drain all fluids before doing this and put blankets or towels around the paintwork to pretect from fluids

take your time and markl everything with masking tape and marker if your unsure where they should go.

If you remove the front pipe from the turbo pack this will make it easier to pull the engine. this can be done by raising the engine and removing the mounts so it will swing to the left side of the engine bay. Also remove the power steering pump and AC pump to get a better swing.this will give you more space to get to things that are normaly imposible to get to,manifold nuts etc.
Hope this helps dude

with the right tools, you should be able to remove the downpipe with the engine in place. remove all the intake pipes up until the aluminium rear turbo intake tube... you should be able to then remove the y pipe ...you will need a UJ on the socket to get to one of the nuts for that. then take off the downpipe. as you lift the engine out, remove the pipe from the acv to the cat as well.
