OK, I\'ve just had the passenger side doorcard off with a view to fitting improved speakers.

The mounting plates seem to be designed for 16cm/6" speakers, it looks possible to mount 17cm/6.5" speakers in there but - and that\'s a fairly big but - you need speakers with a very shallow mounting depth. The speakers in my car are 45mm deep and I think you can get away with 6-8mm of baffleing before you get into "hitting the doorcard" territory.

I tried to fit a set of JL Audios that I have cluttering up the place and they\'re definitely too deep. When fitted with the appropriate 12mm baffle, the speaker hits the doorcard before the doorcard touches the door :(.

I\'m currently fishing for recommendations for suitable speakers on Talkaudio, so far it looks like there are two sets of components that may fit; DLS RS6A or Genesis A16s. Both aren\'t exactly cheap - the DLS are around 160 quid and I\'m still trying to find out how much the Genesis are. But they\'re both around the 52/53mm mounting depth mark.

Alpine SPS-171A can be made to fit with minimal cutting; take a look at the thread here; http://www.mazdarotaryclub.com/forums/showthread.php?t=19496

Cheers Mave, I should\'ve pointed out that all measurements I mentioned above were for installations without cutting the speaker mounting plates. In fact I\'m tempted to get a second set of mounting plates so I can start experimenting a little for my install.
