right i got round to doing this today it went as follows.

This is the engine all to gether. Now you have to remove the top intercooler pipe and elbow so you can get to the throttle body (TB). There are 4 nut that have to be removed  to get the elbow off (10mm), 2 in the top corners, 2 in the bottem (you\'ll have to feel for the bottom ones as you can\'t see them)

You should after removing be able to see this.

Now you need to unhook the throttle cable from the linkage and take any visible vacum hoses off form around the TB. There are 2 if i remember! Also there is a plug behind he TB next to the bilk head (pic below) that must be uncliped and a water hose that is positioned underneth it. Again like with the elbow there are 4 nuts holding the TB onto the UIM (10mm)

just a few pics of the TB (don\'t touch these butterflies you need them)

Now to remove the UIM. There are 2 bolts (12mm) at the rear of the UIM on the left as you look at it. These are earths and they need to be taken off. Along the left hand side there are 4 nuts and one bolt (all 12mm) that need to be removed. There are also 2 other bolts (10mm) that need to come out by the relays under the UIM (pic below) and also one just to the right that holds the UIM onto a bracket just to the right of those (10mm).

This pic is just for referance for when it all goes back together so i know where the vaccum pipes go back on.

There is also a plug that need to be undun under the UIM along with one futher vacum hose. Once all this is disconeted it should lift right off.

The rats nest :eek

Don\'t forget to block up the lower manifold holes as you don\'t want any nasty bits falling down in there!!!

The UIM and the 2ndry butterflies.

Now there are 2 bolts (10mm) that need to come out (pic below) inorder for you to get the butterflies out. Also, and these where real g*ts, there are four screws that need to be taken out the butterflies themselevs.

once the screws are removed the butterflies can be pulled out. Then with a little tung the rod going through the side of the UIM can be pulled out the side.

That gives you this.

there is a hole left on the side of the UIM this needs to be plugged up. I used chemical metal, but you could use a bolt if you thread the hole.

Thats about it for removong them..... now you just have to remember where all the nuts and bolts that you took off go!!! Have fun people

Also just to add deffiantly worth doing it really does make a difference.

I\'ve got a 2nd UIM for sale if anyone wants to do this but not risk the one off thier car or for another 15 I\'ll remove the butterflies and port it properly for you.

what exactly does this achieve then ???

allstaruk

Allows you to remove a solenoid and cleans up the airflow a little into the engine a little, its a small improvment to remove the butterflies but worth it, its even better if you port it.

Very nice step by step there matey, well done,:Thumbsup!  are you going to change the Air Temp sensor for the quicker acting Triumph motorcycle one? and will you replace the fuel lines now that you have the uim off?
Cheers Bob

Fish

Al, how much are you selling these for?

Fish

Fish make me an offer mate.

Sounds interesting... So why are the secondary butterflies there???

Looks like it would also be a good opportunity to replace all the rats nest hoses as well!
Montego Blue 94 R2 FD3S... Bling not included.

Eddie

I think they are in place to stop you booting it from cold? they open fully when the cars warm and you can then boot it.
I am sure people in the know will confirm this

RemarkLima

Ah, I see! A few turbo cars have a double throttle to limit how much throttle when cold... Sounds like a worth while mod at some point :D

yes they stop the car being hammered when cold, well not stop aid shall we say. With the complete removal it aids airflow, i have to say i notived a difference, once up to temp

a very usfully little mod

allstaruk

Any mod that costs bugger all is a good mod, nice work mate.

I didn\'t see much point in porting it big time like you said due to the fact that i\'m going custom in the future and no big tubby will be put on this engine as it is.

Sounds like a plan I was considering the custom route myseld infact I still might I\'d like to change to a different throttlebody and with a custom LIM and UIM so I can put injectors where I want.

Only reason I ported it was cause I could.

Keep the pics coming.

I\'d noticed people on rx7club doing this...something to think about :)
