:Grrr  Rip off?

i know its not practicle for a first car and expensive to run but i think its worth it. and considering insuring a Fiat Punto GT 98, is nearly £700 more the price is not all that bad.
what you think?

My advice. Buy, tax and insure a sensible car and have change left over from that insurance bill! Then in few years time buy somthing better and work your way up

to be honest im suprised you got a quote at all, quite often if someone on the policy is under 21 they wont even quote.

Sorry I think you\'re mad and so is your family for even considering letting you loose in a car like like an RX

Recipe for disaster in my opinion.

To think at 17 you are either mature or skilled enough to take on a car like this is crazy

Will only end in tears.......................

£3800 is a lot of money for insurance. If they find out your the main driver they will tell you to go forth and multiply. Plus they will keep your £3800 for good measures. Best do it the legal way and be the main driver if you are. Best bet if your that desperate for a RX7 is get a gen 1 or 2 NA

Every new driver has a few dings in there first year of driving, with a car this powerful thou you are probably more likely to kill yourself or someone else then just a ding.  It took me a while to get use to the power seein that i went from a 1.4 peugeot 106 to a 2.6 twin turbo rx7, and the car has suprised me a few times and i had over 3 years driving experience

I\'d also like to add my voice to the "get something a bit slower first" chorus and not only due to the insurance cost. These cars aren\'t exactly cheap to run and they will pay you back for neglecting them. And not in a good way...

I\'ve got a tad more driving experience than three years :D (not dissing you, sweetiewells) and I\'ve narrowly avoided becoming a landscape feature several times in the first few years of driving. And that was with cars with 60-80bhp. If I\'d tried this in an FD, I would have become a rather permanent landscape feature...

Me - I think you are off your rocker;)  If you have that kind of money to waste then good luck, buying and insuring is only half of it you will be buying a 15 year old car, which will need work AND running one of these puppies aint cheap, give it a few years so that you learn to drive propperly your poor mother needs some strong advice.

simple answer here..dont do it.. iv been involved since i was 13/14 with Rx7s... and im about to go 17 next month..

Even though insurance isnt  a problem for me as im covered by the company policy , i have no intensions of running an rx7..simply because at 17 there is no way an RX7 is a sensible idea..

Im running a quick tdi sport for a year , then once iv gained road experience and also competed on track in a years time i will then consider an rx7..

Be sensible ..whats the rush....

reason they have quoted £3800 is because they know your mum is insuring the car for you, infact im suprised they even quoted!!!
too many young lads want to run before they can walk and end up being hauled out of a ditch in a body bag,im no saying you cant drive skillfully im just saying you dont have the experience or road sense to handle a fast car.get something a bit slower and work your way up for a few years getting your own no claims and it will be far cheaper and better for you in the long run.i know what its like being young(once)and wanting a fast car but i put my skill in a car and lack of accidents down to starting with a 1.0 then a 1.2 then 1.3 then 1.4 then 1.6 then 1.4 the 2.0turbo(big jump at the end but i was 25 by then and had driven over 100,000 miles).

The insurance is just one cost.  Add to that maintenance, fuel, speeding fines and don’t forget to budget for a rebuild (trust me on this one).

Your a new driver with limited real world driving experience, stepping into a high powered rear wheel car.. its a recipe for disaster!

This isn’t a personal attack on you or your age, but you need to think this through a lot more than you have!

I can remember how much of a tw@t I was when I was driving at 18! I also had no experience, and had to work my way up to a decent car - it made a lot more sense. Even now I would say I drive the 7 carefully, as it really can bite. (17 yr old && an FD == Recipe for disaster!)....sorry, c based programming joke there. Bad one at that! :p

koolance

I am not going to say dont do it like the rest, just think about it. You wouldnt want to pay almost 4k for insurance then regret it! Thats ALOT of money to give away on insurance, get a 106 gti or something for 3k then insure for 1500 or something and you will still have loads of fun and save ALOT of money!! Unless your a lottery winner or something then just do it!

shaunwil

As said before don\'t do it. These cars will spank you proper if they arn\'t driven properly. Blimey some insurance companies won\'t even look at you before your 30 !

If you seriously want a rotary then go the oldskool route and buy a 1st gen or a 2nd gen egi. Or even buy an mx5 and learn to drive. I have to agree that most new drivers will drive like loonies and the less power the better !

Get an MX5 and spend the money on it.  This way you will learn to drive RWD and have lots of fun too.  I got taken round the Nurburgring in a 130bhp 1.8 old skool MX5 and we did it in about 9secs or less, faster than I could in my RX.  The MX5 is one of the best handling cars you can buy, you won\'t need lots of power because you won\'t need to slow down.

It\'s a 2 seater, looks cool, is pretty fast and the birds/ladies with love it, roof down in the sun (damn, I might buy one myself!)

Wait for the RX, it will be worth it.  I had minor crashes in the first few cars I owned, you don\'t want to do that in an RX.  Then there is £200-300 a month on petrol alone, a £100 oil change every 2000-3000 miles with a £500 service every year.  The only cheap part of owning an RX is the road tax.

You may not want to hear it but this is all good advice from people who know!
