hi
basically im a new comer to this whole rotary engine thing! i p/x\'ed my 911 for a 1992 generation 3 (i think! its the new shape twin turbo one) rx7 on saturday and want to check a couple of things as im still learning about these engines. firstly the engine smokes when its cold, iknow they\'re meant to but i wondered how much because mine smokes a fair bit until the engine is warm! also the lil red light on the oil pressure gauge has flickered on a couple of times when its cold and generally when the car is not moving or in tick over. is this a regular thing on these cars or is mine on the way to a rebuild do you think? its done 57000 miles and is completely standard body and engine wise, the other thing is its an auto if that makes a difference? (shameful i know but it was a convinient swap for the winter after which i plan to purchase a manual version)
any help would be much appreciated

cheers people

Smaking i think is pretty normal, especially winter times.

As for the flickering oil lamp get that looked at asap.

Hope fully it is just the oil pump. Im not sure how it builds up pressure in the engine, in a piston engine the crankshaft bearings help the pressure. But im not what it is for the rotary.

Some of the more experienced guys will be help more.

Thx

Hi Adam,

Firstly the rx7 will give a little puff of blue smoke when started from cold, other than that it should not smoke any mor ethan another car would from cold.

secondly the red light on the oil pressure gauge may well mean the oil level is low. Did you check the oild level when you part ex ?
these cars brun oil as part it\'s engine cycle so the oil level needs to be topped up.

or it may be that!!

hi there yeah thanks for the replys, i did check the level and it seems to be dead on, and clear oil no crud or emulsification!
really does baffle me unless its just an over sensetive sensor or something but might be a bit risky to leave it i recon,
and does tend to smoke a fair bit more than i would have thought it should!
ps does anyone have a rough figure on how much oil these are actually meant to go through in say for example 1000 miles or whatever?

cheers people

I appear to have the same problem.
A lot of very oily smelling smoke for 3-5 mins on start up from cold.
Was told it might be oils seals passing oil when off, and the smoke is when it burns it off after starting. Oil consumption has increased a bit since I noticed it. Although annoying will try and get some more life out of it before getting it rebuilt. :-(

Adam, might be worth your while getting it checked over by a specialist to prevent any preventablemihaps.

Depending on where in Surrey you are re:worx aren\'t too far off - in portsmouth.  Check the rotary vendors section.
