Quote from: tinker-27the viper motor is long !,the problem with the fd is they need plenty of power to make conversions worth while i have a very well developed rover 5.0 in mine making 330bhp but it was good but not that special ,i looked at lots of options bmw not enough power and very expensive to tune, lexus v8 same no torque,toyota/nissan 6 to tall/long,ls1 cheap ,cheap to tune realiable and they fit ,and you can take them out to over 7.0l (i ve just ordered a 7.0l bottom end ,hoping for 600ft lb ) there is something about v8 rumble ! mind you a 4 rotor takes some beating for sound !!!!!!

mine will be going an FC, but i know what you mean about needing lots of power, i have 460 already so i would need at least that or more plus loads more torque to make it worth while.

Do you think the V10 is tooo long to fit?

Did you make your own mount/subframe or did you go for the grannyspeed jobby?

400 BHP - 650 KG\'s = 616 BHP Per Ton of Rotary Power

That\'s the way to do it! :Thumbsup!

Nothing is impossible!
Easy to talk about what engine fitting in but!!!,how about the rear end??
Jag\'s locdiff or lorry\'s diff etcccc.. as mazda\'s too weak to handle the torque.

The other scary notion is that a-spec is making a turbo kit for the viper engine too ! Them crazy yanks !

i dont have a mazda diff so it will hopefully be ok. plus the cars not setup for drag racing so no hard launches to cope with.

Also:  Grannys do rear end conversions for the RX7 if need be

thats that sorted then!  i\'ll have one of them!

made my own mounts, the grannyspeed is for left drive and i dont like the way they do it ,the viper does look the business but the ls is cheaper and more avaliable check out //www.torquecentral.com

i have learnt a fair bit about rotaries over the years but it would be a whole new learning curve for me with a V8.  From what i have seen an LS2 (6ltr 400hp) is a lot of money unless you know where i can get one cheaper,  the ls1 wont have enough power for me andi dont know how to make more power out of it.  I dont want to give it to some one else to get the power as i can only afford to do the work myself.  The viper would have enough power straight off........... for now!
What back end do you use in yours,  the one on ebay last week had a 750 bmw diff fitted somehow..

I\'d love to see some pics of your engine bay if you wouldnt mind.
You can email them antnicuk@ntlworld.com

also, what gearbox do you use?

Quite a few people over torque central are using stroked LS2\'2 to make 427 (6 liter) and as with tinker 27 aiming for around 600rwhp. Tinker are you an engineer or/and familiar with V8\'s? anyway if you were starting off again would you start with the LS1 or the LS2 with 427ci being the endgame?

a ls1 with a cam and valve springs and set up properly will make 425-450bhp (crank) 427ci is 7 litre not 6 litre, i am going for a 421ci so not quite 7 litre but close ,it is cheaper to stroke a ls2 (6 litre) than buy a 7 litre ,a std ls1 with a cam and flowed heads make good power and the parts are cheap especially now with the dollar so weak ,the thing is they make power from very low revs and are very smooth ,a 5.7 with minor mods is the best value (2001>), and you can buy a bolt in stroker kit to 6.3 for sensible money .

The LSx engines are a good fit, hinson supercars do subframe and various components for putting the block into a FD3S (unsure if its Lh/rh drive only).  As for tuning the engines, have a look at "How to build High-Performance Chevvy LS1/LS6 V-8s" ISBN 1-884089-84-4  This book makes claims to build or at least give some instructions on how to get 500hp+ from a LS1 block.

Coincendently im thinking about going down the same route with my FD because one of my turbos just went pop (after being reconditioned!).

I would probably go for a LS1 (Pontiac GTO block) and rebuild with some aftermarket bits and bob, would be able to get 400->500 hp from it according to various sources.

And then if thats not enough for you theres always plonking a turbo charger on there - some companies in the US build kits for the Pointiac GTO, so space permitting (I/C positioning etc..) it would probably be possible to use similar specs in the turbo kits to roll your own :)

It seems people in the US really like this conversion and seem to have a lot of success with it.

I really need a guaranteed 500 crank as i have a reliable 460 at the moment so need it to be worth while.  Although taking into account the extra torque and lower power band,  460 bhp v8 would probably be a quicker car.

It would be a tight fit to get 2 turbo\'s in there but it has been done a few times.......

I still want the V10 though cos i\'m greedy !   If it dont fit i\'ll just have to take the jigsaw to the bonet!

Would you need two turbo chargers?  Your talking about running one of each bank of 4 cylinders?

Would there be room for a super charger?

This company mounts both the turbos under the car http://www.airpowersystems.com.au/ls1/us_gto.htm

And there is always remote mounting the turbo charger:

http://www.ststurbo.com/industry_experts

Which mount it at the rear of the vehicle :)

Anyway, if you get this project underway get some piccies up of your progress, would be nice to follow what your doing.
