With the rx7 fund slowing creeping upwards (£1600 after 2 and a half months:Giggle ) thought it would be a good question to ask...

I\'ve got big plans for her (when I do eventually get her!) and was wondering what the general opinion of the board is:

should I a) get a completely stock rex, so i can start from square 1 and go crazy?

or b) get one that has already been modified to a certain extent and build from there?

my personal preference would be a), but im just curious to see what others think benefits/costs of each route would be :cool

cheers

Buy stock, keep it stock. End of story! :D

It\'s the only way the vehicle will hold any value to you.

Just my 2p :)

Let sum1 else loose their bollox on doing mods to the car... U buy it.. And then change the bits u want to suit u.. Its what i did... :Giggle

D1 WTF

if that is the root you want to go down then buy one already modded, otherwise you will end up spending liturally £1000\'s to get it to the same level.  that way someone has already lost the money for you.
it is nice to start off on a fresh car so you know you have done the whole project, but unless you have loads and loads of wonga i wouldnt, i did.  and i think anyone would cry if they knew how much i have spent.  and i am by no where finished.
IF YOU DIDN\'T CARE YOU WOULDN\'T BE LOOKING

buy one modified then do your own touches on it to make it yours. my last rex i spent 16k including buying the base car. sold it for 8k 9 months later. . my 2p worth.
if i had 8 hour to cut down a tree. i`d spend 6 sharpening the axe

Agree with everyone else, buy an already modded car, sell the unwanted bits (let me know first though), buy the bits you want and you end up saving a load of cash.

probedb

a) definitely costs the most but you know what has been done and how well it\'s been done more than b) i guess.

Rob, we don\'t modify to make the car hold it\'s value ;) It\'s all for fun. I wouldn\'t like to say how much cash my two previous cars had spent on them and I got less back for the second one than it cost to buy when standard!

If you want to save cash do b), if you want to take it slowly and have the cash or can save it then go for a).

BlitzBoy

buy a modded one with an Apexi ECU and a rebuilt engine done in this country then put your own personalised touches.

B, definatley buy a modded one, best bet is to get one with a know history maybe of a forum member or one of the vendors above so you atleast know its been modded properly and sensibly.

There is a huge difference between a well modded rx and a badely modded rx.

I\'m with these guys. Make the few reliability mods but keep it stock.

thanx for the replies guys....lots of good points made...

As i said, im not looking 2 purchase \'til next may/june time at the earliest, but think its a good idea to get some info 1st...

At the mo\' my idea is to get one thats already had a rebuild, id rather spend the extra money knowing that im not gonna have to spend £000\'s every month to keep her running. Apart from that, i\'d like to stick with the basics already done...breathing, exhaust, ECU, etc....but as I said i have some crazy plans for her!:3gears-lh  If everything goes according to plan career-wise, money shouldnt be a problem, and to be fair im not that concerned with how long it takes to get her just right!!!

thnx again 4 the advice, feel free to add more!!

If you buy a bone stocker for lets say around £2000-3000,and then carry out the mods from that point including a rebuild then at least you know for sure what has been done, and also the car has the mods that you want.
Some people have spent alot of money on their cars with lot\'s of things that are unecessary, then they have lot\'s of redundant componenets that they often sell on foir a loss.
If you as you have said have alot of plans then why not speak to one of the specialist\'s and get a firm price in your head of what it will cost for you to do and stick with a firm plan.
When you buy a modded car,it often has some of the things you want ,but not all,or maybe you have to change things to suit your plans.
The car definitely should not be looked upon as an investment though, whether stock or modded. The amount of fuel cost\'s alone would preclude that!

Imho the stock car isnt ideal and is fundamentally flawed. The cooling system is rubbish for instance. Personally the minimum I would want would be a UK mapped Apexi power FC with big radiator. Best bet is to get a single turbo, the twins have the most ridiculous birds nest of piping and make SO much heat. single turbo quickly solves this.
