well after 8000 miles of happy motoring on the engine i built for the RX7 i had the misfortune of coming across a very cheap black one with a blown engine (had you all going there didnt i? haha)

Here are the pics from day 1

The start:

the end

and what happens when you dont have an impact gun and have to remove a free spinning pulley:

Next is drain fluids, disconnect coolant and oil cooler pipes, exhaust, pull ECU cable, undo engine mounts and trans and out she comes.

Rebuild and sell on. Its a pretty mint car...its an Auto; but some people like that.

Shafster - if you want me to yes i can! :)

ds2000

Nice, I plan on doing the same once I\'ve got mine running 100% :)

might take you up on that one day mate..... it\'s driving minty at the moment though :)

Bobfish

more today, havent had chance to work on it since day 2.

Auto\'s are different to manuals and a bit of a bitch to get the engine out!

took downpipe off with engine in car this time, much easier!

Thanks man :)

P.s, this car will be for sale after the rebuild.

D1 WTF

good one mate, how easy is it to do a rebuild.  i would love to have the guts to attept it.  must be a forking load cheaper aswell.
IF YOU DIDN\'T CARE YOU WOULDN\'T BE LOOKING

Bobfish

Its a piece of pee pee, just be meticulous and careful, take your time.

Good luck, bobfish :Thumbs-up

I\'ve just finished putting a motor back in mine, and about to start rebuilding the one that came out. Wish I\'d taken some pics while I was doing it now.. Jitesh should be sending the flywheel tool out soon, he just mailed me to ask if it\'s ok to send on to you. If you like it as well I\'ll make some more for sale to club members through a vendor, (will be fairly cheap) or maybe just donate a couple to the club.

Anyway, hope all goes well. If I get stuck with my rebuild would you mind giving me a few pointers? Did you use the DVDs, or just follow the shop manual?

All the best

Ian

Bobfish

Thanks Ian! And cheers for letting me borrow the flywheel tool, its a big help. im not even sure if it will work with an auto trans, but hopefully it should-worth a try!

I\'d deffo buy one if your up for making some more mate, go for it.  Regards to my rebuild i used the bruce turrentine DVD and shop manual. If you get stuck (which you really shouldnt, it\'s really not hard) feel free to give me a call on 07967 511 949, email me carl.newton@affiniti.com or just sort me out a few beer tokens and ill pop up one saturday and do the engine build with you! I love working on these cars so i\'ll never turn down an opportunity to build an engine. Your not too far from me so its cool.

Good luck with your build! Remember to clean and measure everything meticulously, ESPECIALLY the coolant seal tracks.

ianelvar

Cheers matey :D Think I may take you up on that when I get round to it.
Likewise, if I can give you a hand with anything just let me know.
No worries with the tool, it\'s nice to see something I\'ve made being used by other people.

I\'ll get making a few up.. Not sure, but I think it should be ok with the auto, unless the ring gear teeth are different, or in a different place. Anyone know?

Btw, I had a load of trouble removing the counterweight from my second engine that had a dual plate clutch, and an auto CW. I broke a set of pullers trying to remove it with them!
I eventually worked out that I could push it off by winding bolts into the holes that bolt the flywheel to the counterweight (six holes if i remember right) and winding them in till they pushed against the back plate. I protected it with some strips of steel, and wound them in tight to put some pressure on it, then gave the end of the E shaft a small smack with a large hammer, and it popped right off. Quite a long way off, I might add.

Yours may not come to that, but I thought I\'d share my experience with it.

What do you use to check the tolerences? and where do you find this info? (if you dont mind me asking? :D)

Good luck with the build and all! :D
