Things to do while the engine is out?

Hi all,

Just been thinking about what I can do when I rebuild my engine to save it having to come out again? So far I\'ve been thinking:

1. Replace the rats nest (viton or silicon, is either better?)
2. Replace coolant hoses and any other ones that are falling apart.
3. Get engine ported (not sure who to get to do this as re:worx won\'t do porting unless they\'re rebuilding the engine)
4. ????

Anything thoughts on what else that would save me any hassle and be easier to do with the engine out? Am also going to relocate the fuel filter and maybe replace any crappy wiring.

Cheers :)

Depending on what power you are looking for
Fuel upgrades
Apex seal upgrades
Assume you already have ecu sorted?

RX motors (in dorset) will port your engine, even if you\'re doing the building yourself.

Ring Pip at WGT he will port your Plates for you.

I\'d say uprate your Clutch and fit a Light Flywheel if you have your engine out and are going for more hp. It will save you pulling your box out at a later stage.

while your car is in the air, you may as well do the fuel filter...and relocate it if you can lol!! Im gonna put mine somewhere in the engine bay.

I would say check the condition of the turbos while they are out as its a lot easier replacing them while the engine is out.

Also as mentioned, have a look at the condition of your clutch and think about an uprated one if your looking at more power.

A larger downpipe would also be a good thing to replace while the engine is out.

All these things will save you £££\'s in labour costs at a later date.

A rather boring one but if your car if off the ground then you may want to give the underside a good clean and a dose of underseal?

On more of a bay note, you may also want to uprate your engine mounts?

Cheers everyone :D

I shall get onto Pip once the engine is apart and see about getting some porting done and obviously have a good long chat too!

I\'d already decided the engine mounts were getting replaced and a guy in the States has some really good ones (reviewed by a few peeps on rx7club.com). Exhaust is getting completely replaced...Greddy downpipe (80mm), Feed silencer (80mm stainless) and either Racing Beat or Feed (80mm) catback. Will be getting the turbos off to a place in Wakefield that keep advertising in J-Tuner. Fuel filter is a definite... :)

Never thought about the clutch and flywheel tbh so thanks for those. Never thought about a clean or underseal either! I\'m going to be giving the engine bay a good clean while it\'s out too.

I\'ve had a PFC sitting around for a few months that will be going in. No intentions of running anything over stock boost for a while even once it\'s tuned after a long engine run in.....sits and works out how many times he\'ll have to drive up and down the M1 ;) Oh yeah, going to get a boost controller as well.

Coolant system will have to be flushed as it\'s got limescale in it.

Just watching Bruce Turrentine\'s rebuild DVD, quite interesting and looking forward to it now :D Got to buy some tools now...

Just out of Intrest, Is there much advantage uprating the engine mounts? I\'ve got new stock Engine mounts and a Torque Bar, i quite like this set up becouse i can\'t feel the Vibrations throught The Chassis and steering like my old T2 with Delrin mounts.

probedb

I wouldn\'t think so if you have new mounts :) I thought I\'d try some others since mine are likely to be around 12 years old.

Grizzly

Yeh it can\'t hurt.

I guess its just a diffrent way of doing the same thing.

Don\'t forget to have your Injectors Cleaned too. :)
