Hello all

Just finished buying a RX7 93 model and im really happy (see other thread in 3rd generation section)

but once thing ive noticed its idling high

taking the air pump off made huge difference no nasty noise about 2500-3000 and as its got de-cat at the mo no need for it.

Well now revs still sit about 1500 even thou Ive taken the idle valve off and put loads of carb cleaner through it, which is what is recomended reading up the post on here

Also idle screw is all the way in.

But if im sitting there with foot on the brake and I use the clutch (whilst in gear) to lower revs they sit about 1200 why is that? as i find that weird and i know, doing that is not good for the clutch but only did it couple of times

I dont mind getting hands dirty, me and a mate do garage work part time and ive jsut sold my corrado i had before which has few engines in it including a R32 lump all done by us will miss it but ive got new toy now lol.

Also is there w way to repair a rev counter when it comes on and off when it likes as to me seems like something lose

thank you in advance

sorry should add

1993
Performance Back box and decat pipe
Airfilters
otheriwse totaly stnadard
60000 miles on the clock

Also when its at 1500 rpm it pop\'s slightly on idle

lower it down to 1200 no poping but engine shake\'s a little

oh and unplug the idle valve and nothing changes

last owner says it always idle\'s at 1500 but everyone i know has the RX7 idle about 1000 or lower

My 7 idles pretty high until it warms up. I\'ve found blipping the throttle helps. Do the revs settle down as the car warms? Might be worth getting anoter Idle Control Valve and just swapping them over, there\'s plenty of 7\'s being broken at the mo. Disconnecting the air pump on mine made it idle like sh*t. Did you remove the Air Control Valve when you did away with the airpump? Also, are you running a Power FC? Not the best idea to remove the cat whilst still running the stock ECU.

aposegil

nope it drops whilst temp is just under half but sit in traffic after ive lowered the revs using clutch and the car gets even hotter and it raises by its seld

Also whats the air control valve? lol still learning here lol and whats a power FC lol and how do i get one as i dont think i have one

good i wish it was still the corrado i know those things inside out lol

also trying to get hold of a idle valve but before i go spending to much £££ i want to be 100% sure

as ive just paid £300 for my new rear tyres ;)

MillSpeed

Hmmm, sounds like the Idle Control Valve, however I\'d have a good look round for any vacuum pipes that might have come loose. The air control valve is connected to the Lower inlet manifold, the air feed from the air pump passes through it on it\'s way down to the cat. It can be removed if you do away with the air pump and cat. The APEXi Power FC is an after market programmable ECU. Only reason I mentioned it is if you remove the cat you significantly reduce the back pressure on the turbos and potentially end up with incresed boost/boost spikes, especially if you\'ve got after market air filters. If you don\'t add additional fuel you could run lean when the turbos come online and the last thing you want with a rotary is detonation!
I used to have a \'rado (although it was only a 16v jobbie). Damn thing was a nightmare, something was wrong with the ignition on it....kept retarding itself. I didn\'t even know K-Jet could do that! Would still love a VR6 tho.

aposegil

thats cool

but i want to keep that as i cant see it getting thru mot without cat hence why i wasnt planning to take it off

So isnt there a way of remapping the standard ECU? to these mods? or have a extra piggyback ECU to adjust fueling etc ?

also cool we will try get another valve :)

also looking at the amount of vac pipes under there is like plate of pasta lol but i think im going to change them all over to silicon items as they dont look very nice condition especially the manifold to servo pipe starting to crack slightly

Yeah i loved my rado as tarted as a 16v then fulll blown race 2.1 16v which got bored supercharged it blew it up and was half way through putting a R32 engine in it when i sold it

also pity u didnt know me when u had it as i know how to sort that out ;) its annoying this but can happen mainly down to dizzy sadly

Funnily enough, a lot of the japanese tuning companies used to use chipped or modified OEM ECU\'s. No-one over here does that as the Power FC is a much better bet really. You can alter the maps should your mods change. Good idea to replace all the vacuum hoses in the \'rat\'s nest\', but you have to be very careful when removing the pipes from the solenoids as the best part of 13 years of baking under that manifold will have made them as brittle as hell and the nipples have a habit of breaking off.
Tried absolutely everything with the \'Rado, swapping the dizzy, new hall sender in the dizzy, alternator, ECU, closed throttle switch, transistor pack, ISV control unit, ISV, the works. Even got to the point where I was running the ECU off of it\'s own switchable 12v supply direct from the battery. Nothing worked. It had a habit of seeming like it was fixed and running fine for a week or so, then when you\'d dared to believe it was cured it\'d go as flat as a pancake (ususally after it had been ticking over at the lights for more than a few minutes). You could actually watch it happening with a timing strobe....the damn thing would just all of a sudden stop advancing the ignition. Really weird stuff. It\'s the only car that\'s really had me stumped! Did you used to go on the-corrado.net?

aposegil

this shoudl answer that question lol ;)

http://www.the-corrado.net/forum/profile.php?mode=viewprofile&u=10

even used to run E1K VAG night at ace cafe but i think i might be turning up to jap night now lol

pic\'s of my baby :(

also u 110% sure the new dizzy wasnt duff aswell as that should like it when they used to heat up even happened to mine

the other reason was if it has tappets down etc i foudn one car had rear cam out which was a royal pain to figure out

out of interest was urs 2L or 1.8?

so my best bet to go for the Power FC and then get that mapped to my engine?

as i really didnt want to go single turbo as mine leathal as it is lol

MillSpeed

Daym! Nice Corrado mate. What happened to the 16v G60 motor? I was building up a 16v Turbo using a PG G60 bottom end, bahn brenner pistons and a KR head....but then I bought the 7 and got distracted! Still got the turbo motor sat in my garage, but it\'s got the 8v head back on it and a Cossie T3. I\'m determined to make use of it one day! My rado was a 1.8.

Anyways, back to the 7. You probably won\'t need the Power FC if you haven\'t got any serious tuning planned. I\'d think about popping the catalytic convertor back on just for peace of mind. The stock ECU does tend to run pig rich mind, so you\'ve probably got a bit to work with. Have you got a boost gauge? You\'ll be able to see if it\'s overboosting at all. She should be running ~0.8bar full boost.

thanx mate it was nice was even meant to be in a mag week after i blew the engine, i killed it chasing my brothers G40 lol m3 got covers in my smoke lol i built that 16vg60 using all orignal vw parts etc and very cheap to be honest i.e the add on bits

now ive got it sitting in my garage with JE low compression pistons and im not sure what to do with that lol Got three skyline turbo sitting there i was planning to use them one at a time depending how long they lasted lol

also yeah back to the rx thats what ive been reading up as ive already been down the heavy modified route with the corrado i really dont fancy it with the Rx7 its really nice how it is i just want to map it for the best performance out of those twin setups and thats it really ill be very happy with 320bhp

have been looking at stock mounted intercoolers to go on there, greedy one looks nice and i do have a aquamist pump sitting at home ;) so that prob make its way on there but to be honest i love that fact it puls from word go no lag :)

Oh and this weekend hopefully hit it with some zymold lol i know sad but only bought the best for my corrado so i might as well use it on the Rx lol

And yep got to get a boost gauge on there but not found a pod i like to be honest would love it on the a pillar but all kits seem to be for LHD

might have to make my own like i did in the corrado

and mate dont worry about fuel £60 of optimax for 150mile of driving lol and all u can smeel is fuel out of the back of it on idle so i dont think its running lean plus with the rev counter working on and off im not really hammering it

aposegil

quick update

did quick compression test and 7 bar on booth which im told is good?

also changed the manifold to servo pipe to my own made rubber hose and VW valve as i couldnt get the small mazda vavle in the hose and the old hsoe was so cracked it was unreal

tomorrow more testing to see whats wrong with it my try work out how to use that error code thing i read up on today

MillSpeed

7\'s pretty good. Did you get 7 bar on all the faces? You should get 3 readings for each rotor.

aposegil

correct i took the nipple out of the compression tester so it doesnt hold preasure

and we turned it over so we got at least 6 pumps on each one and once myself and once my mate and all the time we saw the neddle hit 7

now to start working on the vacuum lines etc to see if its that as i spoke to the owner today and it did use to idle at 900

can removing the CAT make idle jump high? car was sitting for nearly two months before i got it

MillSpeed

I suppose it\'s possible that the drop in back-pressure might have done something to the idle. Have you got a spare cat you can put on to test? Might be worth rigging the air pump back up too, just to eliminate them from the list of possibilities.
