would this set improve quarter mile times ? is it worth buying ?

O.S. Giken Close Ratio Gear Set. (new part)

Improve your RX-7\'s racetrack performance and shave seconds off your lap times at track days with this gear set! The following are standard ratios as fitted to RX-7\'s from 1st - 5th gear: 3.483 2.015 1.391 1.000 0.806 For making a close ratio box, the 1st 3 gears can be modified with an O.S. Giken kit to become: 2.714 1.742 1.267 This kit including layshaft and gear set is priced at: £1,090.00 The 4th and 5th gear ratios are not usually worth changing, as the difference is only marginal with the 5th ratio, whilst 4th stays the same: 2.578 1.772 1.289 1.000 0.821

Ist question I would be asking would be \'is it any stronger than the stock setup\' Ratios look great, as a lot of \'draggers\' have found once you are running +400atw the quality of gear change drops off and they tend to break, bearing in mind these are just the internals I would still be somewhat suspect as to the strength, having said that I would certainly be interested if these were to become available:Thumbs-up

Yep - good answers John, just to add...

It depends where you want to go with the car?  If it is an FD and you plan on running consistent 10-11 second passes, then the driveline wise the gearbox, diff. and driveshafts need to be looked at.  Slicks are best of course to help with consistency.

A well built FD box can be surprisingly strong, and will run 9\'s - but I don\'t know how many passes you will get out of it!?

The internals would be reasonably strong, but the casing can also be a weak point when running serious power and big tyres etc.

If you are on a limited budget - it might not be a bad way to go, but as I mentioned FD boxes can hold together reasonably well (not one with 100,000kms on though!).

If it is only for drag and you have a bit of dosh to spare, why not look at an Auto box.

Decide what you want to do with the car first, then build the car up to that spec. before throwing money at the engine to make AMAZING hp that you can\'t actually put down on track.
Thanks,

i am on a budget. it seems the sensible option for me at the moment rather than just waiting for the box to blow up i might aswell get it all done at once. im trying to be realistic as im not rich by any means. im aiming for 500 atw without nitrous. but im concentrating more on getting the power down and weight saving rather than all out power. ive always said to you dont need mega power to get good times... although it does help lol.

i thought id ask on here first as i dont have a clue about ratios.

i was originally going to have it for just the strip but i feel its a bit of a waste to restrict an rx7 to the strip. i will have to drive it to meets and races.

the internals are from newera parts and i thought they are rather cheap compared to what ive seen. i dont fancy paying over 6k for a full box !

So which is it? On a budget, or wanting 500 rwhp. Make your mind up because you won\'t manage both.

And expect lots of breakages along the way.

*I\'m not trying to be a party pooper, honest :) lots of smilies :) *

1) it will cost u to get the box built up by a competent gearbox builder dont forget

2) whether it will make u faster will depend on the ratios obviously

3) dogs boxes designed for the track arent the best for the strip - they will/do break

4) if u drive the car on the street much think long and hard - u really need to rev-match your changes to keep it in good order which takes a bit of practise :rollin

Dog boxes are awesome at times, tedious at others, largely depending what you are trying to do with it...

I think a Supra 6 speed gearbox conversion would be an option. Been done a few times in the States. Obviously you would have to get a bellhousing made up

Looked into the Supra idea, tis a good option, only problem is finding one the other it is most likely will have seen some miles, I did find a company on the south coast who made 5 and 6 speed boxes able to take between 450 and 600 ftlbs seemed quite a good deal at between £1100 and £1600 for a brand new box, you would have a fair bit to add to that getting an adaptor made up for the bell housing and adjustment to the prop ect.

loads of Supras in the 8s and 9s in Usa on standard 6 speed, it should work well in a Fd given we are lighter and produce less torque

Even the supra box isn\'t bullet proof, just ask Jase or have a look at the pics of the damage to his and its only running behind a 12at

I think I would go the Supra gearbox option anyway rather then the dog box option

1. They not dog internals, they are still syncros, just different ratios.
2. However I did have the 3 gear kit in my 33 GTR and that made a big difference, much more usuable power band on a big single.
3. Stock boxes dont seem to die suddenly, they just seem to get harder and harder to shift.
4. I thought manual supra boxes were horrible, but I was able to shift 2nd to 3rd without the clutch on a couple of T88 ones.
5. Just use the stock box, it will easily take you into the 10s.

Good point, helps to actually read the description :P this is just a set of differently spaced gears for 1-3, still synchro\'d.

Only driven a 6 spd (getrag?) supra box that i really recall and that was nice.

I agree with Ross, the stock box in good nick is a 10 second piece of kit, its just a case of learning to shift it QUICK under pressure :Tongue1

Damn ross got in first with the non dog bit. If you put the power through it get used to having it refreshed, just the same as high hp engines
