Am I right in thinking that the only internal pump that doesnt need at least a quarter of a tank is the Apexi r33 pump ?

I\'m running the stock twins at the moment and I\'m trying to go Single(GT35) bit by bit and I want to sort the fuelling first. I was going to go for the Bosch 044 but I dont want to have to worry about the fuel level. Can this be overcome by fitting a swirl pot ? and if so , is the combined cost of setup with a Swirl pot going to be more than the Apexi pump ?

Any pros / cons to either setup ?

Cheers for any advice....

From what i have read and researched confirms what you\'re saying: the Apexi BNR33 fuel pump is the only one that can cope with low fuel and not having to have a swirl pump (And i\'m lucky enough to have got my hands on one! :D For only £100 too!) Brand new they\'re very expensive at about £300.

Otherwise you either have to always have 1/4 tank of petrol, or a swirl pot which was just too much hastle for me to want to sort out.

Cant comment on the Apexi as I have only had dealings with the 044 because I\'ve always used it as a one size fits all however just a word of warning, please don\'t fit a swirl pot in the back of the car with you if you go for an 044 put up with the low fuel thing untill someone gets a safe swirl pot on the market .

I say this because over the last few years I have  witnessed with absolute horror people with FD\'s putting fuel pumps and pots in the back of the car where potentially the driver can be sprayed with fuel from the high pressure fuel system.

In any form of racing you are demanded by rules and common sense to separate the driver and fuel systems so if there is a leak it does not get to the driver.

I am surprised that these people have not thought to go that bit further for safety\'s sake and put it all in a leak proof box at least.

I have promised myself that I will design a swirl pot that is out of the driver/passenger compartment some time for FD\'s as I have a race company to make them just got to find the time to do it.

The swirl pot in the rear issue was deffo the cause of Blitzboys cars demise as we all sadly know.

BNR33 is cool but i believe the 044 is one that matches almost every criteria for modding :god

Got me one too....no problems at low fuel levels either ....around 450atw and running base fuel pressure of 40psi injectors maxing at 73%.....so in my book the apexi one is worth every penny!!!:god

Not quite the case mate, the fuel system WAS mounted UNDER the car with the consideration of driver safety. Only system that I know of in the country.

This is one of the problems on a forum, everyone knows everyones business, with only half the story told, please ensure you get the facts correct.

As Clive stated pumps and swirl pots unprotected in the boot is an accident waiting to happen, just consider what could have potentialy happened in Marks case, I dread to think...............

Not need to be sarchastic mate, thought i had read the swirl pot was in the boot and there was a leak meaning fuel was then in boot once indicator was selected then it ignited ???

Run a Cosmo and the fuel tank is the boot, well 50% of it anyway mounted full width right behind the rear seats.

Not even trying mate, just correcting the facts that you posted, pump / swirl pot were mounted under the car AND were designed to be there unlike a lot of instalations that you see walking around shows / meets that are more often than not in the boot, you have to understand you have a flow and return fuel lines running under the car that in the case of the 44 / R33 pumps are regulated to 50 - 60psi, if there is ANY leak it would be deemed to be close to the electrics purely by pressure alone, thus a potential explosion / fire, if the setup HAD been in the boot the consiquenses could have been fatal.

BlitzBoy

I can confirm the swirl pot was mounted underneath on the OUTSIDE of the car.

If it was on the inside of the car I would not be here to speaking to you.

It was vapour from the leak coming back into the boot and the spark of the indicator causing the fireball.

Mark I am Very very pleased to hear this because as tragic as this was had it been in the car squirting lighted fuel around in the car at you we may have lost you, and cars are so much easier to replace than people !

BTW, My comment was not aimed at your car at all as I don\'t know what your fuel set up was, till tonight for all I knew it could have been a return pipe that had fallen off , my comments were actualy aimed at the FD\'s I had seen with my own eyes over the years with pumps and swirl pots out in the open inside the car and one even had an 044 strapped to the roll cage behind his head :( !!!

I really don\'t say this stuff for nothing to try and warn people, years ago I saw a banger driver die of a fuel fire, he sadly got tangled up in his seat belts whilst panicing and had to get back into the car to try and free himself and died of a heart attack when getting backk in!

I have one fitted in the boot.  Initially when fitted by the original company, they said it was fine to put it there.  They couldn\'t see how this could be a potential nightmare.

However Brunswick re-fitted the swirl pot in the spare wheel bay, and then put an aluminium fireguard over it.  We use 2 lift pumps one on either side of the fuel tank

gmogle

So am I right in thinking that the R33 Skyline pump is the best one to go for and eliminates the need for a swirl pot ?

AtomicRex

The swirl pot set up will be about the same price, and will guarantee no loss of fuel pressure
