Hi guys,

Just to pick your brains a bit about the whole ECU thing.

If You have one of the newer model RX7\'s with a 16bit ECU it is generally considered better than the 8bit ones, I guess, but if you are doing some reasonable modding and try to get a car up to around 350bhp I guess an aftermarket Apexi fc is the way to go so then does it actually matter whether the car started with a 8 bit or 16 bit ECU  ?

does that make sense ???

since you talkin about ecu and i was readin about HKS FCON v pro and i know very few ppl can tune them. however the F CON V PRO is actually 32 bit ecu!!!!!i dont know if thats make it better????

oooops just realised I posted this in the wrong thread...

to get a car up to circa 350bhp aty the fly, I think it goes without saying you will need a aftermarket ecu

mods to get to that power are
downpipe
cat replacement pipe
suitable cat back exhaust
induction

to realise the power these mods can provide, and prevent you running lean and blowing up your engine,  you will need to have a aftermarket fully mappable ECU

there are different models of ECU for 8 bit and 16 bit ecu cars, for instance when you buy a apexi PFC but it makes didly squat difference which ECU the car origninally came with when you start modding as long as you get the right aftermarket type one for your car version

Exactly right Dave:wave
Don\'t forget it\'s not just the case of \'buying\', plug & play - it will have to be tuned to the mods you have = all costs money:(  - rolling road ect.

Cheers guys,

The main question was is it beneficial to start with a later model car for the 16bit ECU if I am going to use the APEXI fc for tuning.... which has been answered by Dave.

I think for 350, you might need a little porting to help you on your way. You will also need to sort out the fuelling on it as well.

Did a little digging about and yes the Apexi PFC is only a 16bit ECU, but then again so is the much respected Haltech E6K, and Autronic SMC & SM2 ECU\'s.

Only when you start paying lots of money do you get 32bit ECU\'s.

if the apexi is 16 bit only does this mean i couldnt have one on my rx cos its an older model with an 8 bit ecu?

Fish

Matt, they do different versions of the ECU to fit the different model year FD\'s. All the ECU\'s however are 16bit.

I can\'t see you\'d need much computing power to run an ignition / fueling map.  8 bit should be fine.  Probably more powerful than the computers that put man on the moon, so probably sufficient for an RX-7!  Having said that, there\'s probably more computing power in the average toaster these days!

I remember a uni lecture that told me there was more computing power in modern wrist watches than there was in the moon landing thing.

Funny how so many years later we cant do it again
