Hi

is there a isurance company that will let a 17 year old drive a FD. Or if he can get insured on a small car fully comp, would they let a 17 year old drive it 3rd party.

thanks

nikp

You\'d have to hunt really, really, really, really hard to find someone to insure you. And then if you do find someone, it would cost well over a grand, probably over 2!

james01uk

if someone insures you it will be more like 4 grand i reckon

bit of a powerful car for a first driver
be careful if ya do mate

Doing the old insuring a small car FC and driving another car third party is not strictly legal...wait, no its totally illegal....insurerers used to put that bit in for emergency purposes...not so that young drivers can go out and drive fast sports cars.

Insurers are now removing that bit from FC policies altogether for that exact reason.....

And if the 17 year old does stack it in that scenario, an insurer would rarely pay out.....

Actually, that driving other cars third party only option only applies if the vehicle being driven is itself insured seperately by the owner / keeper. Besides, someone needs to insure it in order to tax it.

Get Your Parents To Insure It And You Go Second Driver

hi everyone

im 38 and going to be the main driver. i just thought the young un can drive it the odd occasion. using his own policy

cheers

It\'d only be a matter of time before if gets driven into a hedge anyhow. Young people are a massive risk - hence the high premiums.

I would say you\'d be looking at adding him as a named driver. I doubt you\'d find any insurer would touch a 17 year old with an FD. It\'s group 20!

Seriously you\'d be looking at lottery money to get it insured properly and that\'s if you find someone who doesn\'t just laugh and put the phone down.

If you have got lottery funds to hand then I\'ve heard you can put a £1Million in a Bond somewhere that acts as insurance should you have an accident it pays for the damage to others!

Sorry to wee on your cornflakes but that\'s the way I see it.

If you do manage to find a policy for less than £5k then I\'d be shocked.

Please do keep us updated on your search though.

best wishes

Gareth

McCARTHY

just to give you an idea i\'m 22 with 6 pionts on my licence (SP30 and TS50 i think?) i pay £1800 which is alot but due to the points and type of car some poeple wouldn\'t even go near me. Other quotes i has where 3k and 3.7k for a year 3rd party!!!!!

McCARTHY

in awmswer to the last part of your question i did this for a short while when i was 20 on an STI RA impreza but due to the climding number of people that where doing this, as also said before. I know when i was about 16 there was a loaded family that lived over the road from my Nan\'s house, keep themselves to them selves  etc, and for the son\'s 18th not long after he passed his test daddy bought him a Classic 911 (A reg jobbie) having gone from small hatch back straight into rear wheel rear engine sports car he was not ready for it. 2 weeks later he crash and that was the end of the porche and him due to the lack of respect for the car and lack of experience on the road.

I think that the insuers wised up to this very quickly and now with most policies you can only drive certain types of cars on a third party policy if you are fully comp unless your 25+

i have to say i feel the outlook is bleek for you whilst you are 17. i would be very interested to see hoe you get on in finding someone

ds2000

IIRC the 3rd party thing is now only for over 25s!

McCARTHY

so thats applies to vehicles then
