Hi all,
Just got my boost problem sorted out by Geff and Chris down at RE-WORX....thanks guys.

With the car running well again iv\'e just installed an Apexi PFC.

I am planning now to fit a complete exhaust system and air filters and up the boost to 14 psi.

Will the ecu be ok on the base map or will i need to get it re-mapped on the rolling road.

CHEERS !

STEVE ( scared stiff of blowing it up!!!!).....

Matt

what bhp is your car with the apexi fitted? do u notce a difference

i dont think you need it remapped if you add an exhaust and air filters, but you could get it remapped to get more power

steevo

Hi Matt,
My car is a 98 type r with 265 bhp as standard. I would estimate that the apexi has given me an extra 10-15 bhp through improved fuel/ignition mapping. The performance improvement is hardly noticeable as it\'s only 5% gain overall.
Once iv\'e freed up the breathing and upped the boost i\'m hoping to get around 320-330 bhp, then i should notice the difference.

Anybody know if i need uprated fuel pump and regulator at this level.

Have to disagree with Matt! The default Apexi map is very rich, but I still wouldnt trust it.

After fitting the exhaust system and air filters, get it checked over to make sure that it\'s not running lean. As this is one of the combo\'s that can make it lean.

Over to the other guys already running the PFC\'s.

the PFC should be fine with the base maps. After you do the exhaust and filters but i would suggest only running super plus unleaded and only upping boost when you get the fuel pump, injectors uprated along with the FMIC.......

I have looked at posts talking about re-mapping ecu\'s or buying an uprated one.  Could anyone tell me what the best option is for more power or the best option if i was to add more engine mods.

Glenn Butcher

Any change in and around the engine should be checked using a proper wide band sensor on a rolling road.  It is damn good insurance to check these things.  Rather than throw it on and hope for the best.

Besides, if it is tuned correctly for your setup not only will it be more reliable but you could make more power - safely.

But more importantly...doing things like changing the exhaust can create boost spikes, and no ECU is going to help you there.  The standard wastegate on the FD is physically too small to stop spikes and possible boost creep.  So keep a close eye on it.  If it does spike or creep then you\'ll have no option but to put a more restrictive exhaust on it.
Thanks,

Gman

what would it creep up to?  I am driving it back from manchester so i guess i can check then

Are there any places in essex or south east that woul dbe able to help as i am a 3rd gen virgin

Glenn Butcher

Hard to say, but anything around or above 14-15psi / approx 1 BAR would be a concern. (THIS IS IF YOU HAVE AN APEXI - on a standard ECU your engine wont last long).

Times to check for spike would be between gears, and when nailing it at low revs (sometimes the first turbo can spike, also the transition between the two).  It gets complicated, keep a close eye on it before you get on the rollers.
Thanks,

Matt

i though i might have been lol, i was kinda of guessing

Fish

Matt, I have to say that I dont find the \'lol\' bit funny at all. :(

If you\'re going to advise someone on what mods to make, please make sure that you know how those mods WILL effect the car.

A complete exhaust system will lean out a rotary engine, and could cause boost spikes.

Sorry if this sounds harsh, but I dont want to see engines die due to bad advice.

Dan

Matt

well i didnt know i was wrong i was just saying what i thought i knew, but i knew if i was wrong someone would correct me

Glenn Butcher

No probs. Matt - I can see where Dan was coming from also.  I think many an engine has let go because of "what you would think" is a simple exhaust change.

Steevo - please keep us posted.
Thanks,

steevo

Thanks everyone for the advice,i shall definately check the AFR once mods are in place.

I was only going to change the downpipe and cat section of the exhaust leaving the rear box in place,do you think this will reduce any overboost problems.

One last thing, do i really need uprated injectors at 1 bar or just a bigger pump and a regulator.

CHEERS!...

STEVE....

Keeping the rear box will help, and it\'ll also keep the noise down a bit for track days if you do them :)

For one bar, you really could do with bigger injectors.

You\'ll be running very high injector duty with the stock units and this could lead to a mishap if abused repeatedly.

If you are not ready for injectors, keep boost down to 0.9 bar tops.
