i currently have a boost gauge fitted but i want to change the actual gauge cos its looking old and tatty, can i just simply pull the old one off the tube and connect the new one or is it more complicated

If you buy another mechanical guage and the rubber tube is the same size for the new gauge as the old one (dont see any reason why it shouldnt be as they will both take pressure off of the plenum) then yes - unplug/plug back in, job done.

If you buy an \'electronic\' guage (e.g. Defi Link etc etc) then no, you will have to start from scratch in the engine bay and have to draw power for it from some where...

If the one that is in at the moment has a tube going to the back, make sure that the one you buy is a mechanical version NOT electric.  Then it will plug straight in.  How is it mounted?  What size is it?

Oh, and if the gauge at the moment sits in a pod - make sure you get the same size gauge as replacement! they are either 52mm or 60mm generally.
