Which is safer? Unmapped Apexi or Std Jap ECU

I\'ve got an apexi PFC that I\'m thinking of fitting this weekend. However I use my car every day to drive to work, and so far (touch wood) reliability has been good.

I have an Apexi induction kit and a cat-back exhaust so nothing too major, but I guess I am on the limits of safety for the Original Japanese ECU (although I tend to fill up on Tesco 99 RON fuel), however would changing to an unmapped Apexi PFC be any safer, in terms of running lean?

Why not just take it easy and stay off boost until you can take it someplase to check it out. Chances are the base map apexi will be fine but stay on the safe side.

it was certainly much better for me.

However I don\'t know if it would be better for everyone.

With the mods that you have you should not have any probs running the Apexi on its base map, if you are not intending carrying out any more mods in the near future I would get it re-mapped asap and see the grin factor :)  not only in performance but in economy as well.
If you are looking to add additional mods I would personaly leave it alone untill you are ready to fit the other bits and then get it mapped. hth

Had an interesting find

Took off the ECU panel to find a Redom unit in it. I didn\'t know I had this.

Still I\'m guessing the Apexi is better

I have read up a Bit on Power fc\'s recently as i was also thinking of fitting a PFC with Base map, it would seem there is two types of PFC for my car (early 93-95) and they recomend the old ones be mapped as soon as they are fitted as Apexi designed the map to only be good for start up and should be set up at the same time as Fitting, the New PFC\'s have a map thats been made a litle rich for a Stock car so it can be run without it blowing up due to missing information on the Map, So from what i can tell if you plan to use the PFC for any period on a stockish car unmapped buy a new one. People are also telling me that the Apexi base map even though it runs well is Rich (so poor MPG) and can run lumpy on idle (if you have the air pump removed like me)

Hope this makes sence.

I really know very little about all these things, but I have been told the Redom is a plug and play chip that is not mappable.

So, it\'s fine if the mods you have are what the people who created the Redom map were tuning to, but otherwise...? I dunno. :xconfused

Do you know if it\'s running increased boost? I think the Redom may do this, possibly not what you want if not properly mapped!?

These are the thoughts of a total novice by the way, I\'m sure somebody knowledgable will be along to correct me in a minute... :D

Edit: http://www.mazdarotaryclub.com/forums/showthread.php?t=24395 - Post just down the page on Redom ECUs! :)

The redom unit was what I took out. To be honest I never had any problems with it which is why I always thought it was a stock ECU.

According to the sticker on it it was running 0.9 bar on the Primary turbo and 0.8 on the secondary

The only thing which was added in the UK was an Apexi Induction kit, which was done by the previous owner.

Apparently the Redom runs rich anyway so adding this I doubt would be a problem.

However, the Apexi is in now, so its all academic.

Unless someone wants to buy a Redom ECU  :D
