Hi guys. I\'m new to these RX7s and I have just got a 1993 R Type, so thanks for any help in advance!

I\'ve tried to be a good boy and searched the forums but I\'m not sure exactly what is going on: after even short runs, with no boost, smoke starts to rise from the driver\'s side of the engine near the turbo. It looks like it\'s coming from deep inside the tangle of hoses and pipes. I\'ve seen what looks like an oil leak around the top of the thick black plastic pipe that goes into the top of the turbo but I don\'t think that\'s where it\'s smoking from. (As a side note, if I press down on the pipe it \'clonks\' back in (it seems to come out about half a cm) , but always seems to dislodge itself again after a drive). Also, it seems to come in \'waves\' eg: smoke will waft out, then stop, then waft out, then stop about every 4 seconds.

From what I have read either the turbo will need new seals on it or drainer pipes are leaking, but how can I check so I know for certain? What should I look for? I will do my best to take some pics...

Anyone have any ideas? Thanks guys!

Not sure if this is the same thing, but i have smoke rising from between the turbo pack and bulk head, after runs. This is due to one of the seals on the back of the engine leaking and dripping on too the  down pipe. Not sure what these seals are for, prehaps someone could shed light on their names.

The pipe you describe sounds like the Dump Valve pipe, it\'s the one thats comes of the Y pipe, try replacing the jubilee clip that holds it in place.

Not sure on your set up but check the section of soft pipe between the hard pipe that comes over the top of the enige and leads down to the turbos.

I had a split in one a while back and that would chuff smoke out when it spat a bit of residual oil out.

Thanks for the replies guys, I am getting it on a ramp today and will let you know what happens.

When you underneath, you will probably have to clean everything, and then run the car and watch to see if you can spot where its coming from.

The drain pipes for the oil, that come from the turbo and go to the sump, are a possible source.

On my car it turned out the oil injectors were faulty, there is a little one way valve in them, and on mine, this had failed, allowing oil to escape to their breathers. This would lie on top of the rotor housing and ocassionally drip down onto the turbos.
