Hi, just wondered how u can tell if a water seal has gone? drove the my 3rd gen Rx7 yesterday, parked up, loads of smoke/steam from the engine, had coolant on the top of the air filter hoses from the turbo\'s, and also some in the sump guard pan. can\'t work out where it is from? can\'t find any split hoses and the rad seems fine? if a water seal had gone then would it spray water out into the engine bay?

cheers

Sounds like the whole coolant system was too full.

i.e. Both the main system and hte expansion tank were topped right up.  As the coolant heated up it expanded and probably escaped from the cap of the expansion tank (front left as you look into the engine bay).

If your water seals had gone then the water would be leaking internally in the engine not externally.

The main filler (cap dead center behind the airbox) should be full but the expansion tank should have room for the coolant to expand into.

Hope this helps,

Iain

My FD3S got a new engine because it was putting out water from around the overflow bottle. It did this only when driving over one hour. Short trips were never a problem.
This was a water seal problem -> pressure on the cooling system.
