Does the engine oil need to be check every week cause i  heard it run out real quik ???? plz give me help

Hi Mate,

I have heard reports that this uses a far greater amount of oil than the previous rx7\'s before it did and needs to be checked every time yu fill it up with petrol which is a bit daunting:confused:  but where these reports have come from I don\'t really know the source of, it could be from Mazda or just the good old rumour mill??.

I read on one of the US forums that there is already a service bulletin from Mazda about this. How true I cannot confirm.

I don\'t believe this, I really don\'t. What is the problem with this oil??

"The Mazda RX-8 requires regular
inspection of the engine oil level. The
compact, high performance RENESIS
rotary engine in your vehicle consumes
a small amount of engine oil due to its
structural design.
Although your vehicle is equipped
with an engine oil level warning light
and an engine oil pressure gauge, it is
best to keep the engine oil level in the
range between full and low by
checking the oil dipstick regularly.
Inspect the level when refueling."

Quoted directly from American owners manual.

"It is owner\'s responsibility to check the oil level at regular intervals (such as every fuel stop)." quoted from my wife\'s Daewoo Matiz owner\'s manual.

Hmmm I\'m noticing a theme here :) For some unexplained reason the manufacturers of cars would like us to undertake some regular basic car maintenance. What a revolutionary idea.

From what I\'ve heard the RX-8 uses about half as much oil as an RX-7. I can\'t find any mention of excessive oil consumption on American forums though there are quite a few people whining about fuel consumption.

So a little summary for those of you thinking about buying an RX8.

It’s not a diesel it\'s a rotary engined sports car thus don\'t expect good fuel economy.
It\'s a rotary engine thus it will use some oil. If the prospect of having to check oil regularly fills you with dread don\'t buy a car, get a bicycle or use public transport.

See now that wasn\'t difficult :D

"Changed mine today @2,500 mi. Thanks for your comments about the tightness of the factory filter. I bought a filter cap at the local Autozone to allow removeal of the filter with a ratchet. Sure glad I bought it as the filter felt like it had been installed with an impact. My oil also looked very dark for only having 2,500 miles.
BTW my oil level before oil change was at 1/4 down from full on the dipstick. Pretty low oil consumption."

This post is about the difficulty people have had doing an oil change on their car. Most of them seem to like changing their oil every 2500 - 5000 miles. In britain we seem to have difficulty checking the oil level.
Hmmm and they say americans are ignorant

So there you have it if you do 10000 miles on one tank of petrol
or in one week, (thats doing a week of solid driving averaging just under 60mph), you could be in real danger of running out of oil  :D

Either way you would  be known as the most economical driver ever or you would have the sorest arse in the world. :D

Hi Jai and welcome.

I have spoken about my concerns about oil consumption to Mazda direct about the frequency of checking the oil and l believe they are being over cautious about this to protect themselves against constantly heavy footed drivers.

l say this because when l brought my first Rotary ( a Gen 2 ) l couldn\'t work out why sometimes l would go for weeks and weeks without adding oil and then other times it needed it on what seemed like a fairly regular basis.

This was due to ME!   l found out later that there was a rod connected to the oil pump via the throttle linkage and that as the throttle is depressed a tiny amount of oil is injected into the engines Rotary chambers so the more l was in a wide open throttle situation the more oil l used !.

Hope fully this will explain the RX-8 oil consumption mystery as l am sure that owners who drive their cars around normally and not flat out every where all the time will have no problems at all.

Hope this helps put a few new RX-8 owners minds at rest.

Yeah, they are meant to use oil... and it is not because anything is wearing out - but to lubricate the apex seals.  The more you stick your foot up it, the more it will eat.  Welcome to the world of rotary ownership :rollin

True,
Ive had my rx8 for 3 weeks and put 1300 miles on it.
I already had to ad 1/8 of a quart of oil to it. I have diriven it pretty hard so it fugures.

Anyway as with any car if you care about it TAKE CARE OF IT, checking the oil is not such a hassle (especialy when you open the engine bay at your local gas station and instantly a small crowd forms to watch you cheking the oil on an 8) :-)

While your at it check the tire presure, (they tend to run lower than optimal) at least when they are realy new

Take care...

ohh, you first rotary was a N/A FC? Or was it Turbo II with 180 HP?
All other rotarys begining from Turbo II with 200HP comes with electrical Oil pump.
I didn\'t see RX-8 engine, but I\'m pretty shure, that Mazda didn\'t go back to rod that is connected to throttle and is using electical oil pump in RX-8 to.
Of couse, more you put your feet down more oil will be injected.
