Got my compression test done yesterday, pleased with the results

Front 8.6 8.5 8.6
Rear  7.9 8.0 8.0

Problem is though, I\'ve got oil p*ssing out of the bottom of the turbo pack, and an air leak somewhere around the top of it (cracked inlet perhaps) so this is gonna have to be replaced

Trying to decide whether to go single turbo conversion, or just replace with recon pack both of which are currently available via forum members.

Hmmmm

Recon pack is going to be cheapest.

I am not sure how you think replacing the pack is going to solve these problems, though. The problems are from bits that CONNECT to the turbo\'s, not the turbo\'s themselves.

Yes, the turbos may have to come off to fix the problem/s , but the turbo\'s arent faulty are they?

Well, certainly 1 of the turbos is leaking oil out of the bottom big time.  So at the very least it needs stripping and new oil seals.  And the air is leaking where the manifold bolts on to the turbo pack, so either manifold is cracked or the turbo pack is cracked, which I am told by Geoff at RE can be a common occurance, he showed me a turbo pack he had that had done the same thing.

As I say, the turbo pack needs to come out and be opened up, so I figure I may as well get them recond or replace them.

What are the relative pros and cons of single turbo vs stock config ?

Obviously price is a factor, but if a job is worth doing...

I would say the most likely cause of the oil leak is -

the oil drains from the turbos back to the sump via a metal pipe. This pipe has a gasket where it joins to the turbo , a little metal one, and this most likely needs replacing.

If you mean the Exhaust manifold, then you men where the Turbos bolt onto the exhaust manifold?   Yes, the exhaust manifold can crack. Sometimes , when you buy a used turbo pack, it could include the manifold. I dont know MAzda\'s price for the manifold, but I suppose it might cheaper then to buy a used pack. Make sure it includes the manifold !

You said an "air" leak, so I take that to mean the intake manifold is leaking. This is, again, most likely a gasket. Unfortunately, the Turbo pack must be removed to replace this. Early cars had paper gasket, later cars had metal.

going single is not just about getting a turbo kit......think injectors, pump, i/c pipe fabrication, PFC, labour....and mapping....AKA Nuff dough!!!!
