With tiptronic you have the option of shifting gears, so you\'re able to decide when you want to shift gears. With an automatic the system decides for you all the time.
There are different types of tiptronic systems. I\'ll leave that to someone with more in depth info.

I thought Tiptronic was a manual car and you change gears with buttons by the steering wheel rather than a gear stick????

probably wrong but could have sworn thats what it is.

Most of the FTO\'s have a Tiptronic gerbox.
In automatic mode you have your usual park, drive, reverse, etc choices then if you flick the gearstick over to the left you have +up -down options to change gear. No controls on the steering wheel though.

I was lucky enough to have a manual as the Tip box sapped quiet a bit of power over the manual box.

Yeah theres no clutch in the Tiptronic FTO\'s.

IIRC I think when your in drive in the automatic mode you can then push the stick to the left and go into manual +up - down mode. The gaitor looks a bit like a staggered H. Hope that makes sense.

inteloper, you are right, the steptronic is an up and down selector without a clutch, i have it in my BMW, some put the padels on the steering column and some use the gear stick when in drive you just push it left as mentioned above and click it up and down as you please,   even though i have only just bought my BMW, i have rarely used it as if you have enough power you might as well just floor it and let it kick down, i cant tell any difference in performance.  Although it is good for engine breaking as once its in gear you have the benefit of direct engine breaking.
400 BHP - 650 KG\'s = 616 BHP Per Ton of Rotary Power

That\'s the way to do it! :Thumbsup!
