Hi folks

I have bought an RX7 subject to a satisfactory compression test :cool . All being well, I shall be driving around in it soon. This will make a nice change from my heavy TT 300ZX.

I need to have the compression test carried out and the car is in Luton. Can anyone recommend a garage around/near Luton who can carry this out competently and what the likely cost may be for this?

I am aware of WGT, RE:Worx, Jimmy\'s and Hayward Rotary but they are probably too far to ask the seller to take it to them- avoid Hurley Engineering seems to be opinion on this forum.

I would very much appreciate your recommendations.

Thanks in advance,

Van

Van - might be a tricky one to get done.  You could approach the workshops and see if they are willing to travel, but you would need to pay for their travel expenses I guess.  Let us know how you get on.
Thanks,

nikp

It might be worth asking any of the Mazda dealerships - they might be able to do it, depends whether they have the quipment or not. After all, it\'s not a difficult task to do

None will touch them round Luton - don\'t go to PTS either - heard they\'re crap. Try Rotechnics in Reading - thats only round the m25
The Beatles were prats.."Money can\'t buy me lovveeee".. utter rubbish. You can buy love here

Buy my car foo! :D

Rotechniks seems to be the best so far. I\'ll suggest them to the seller.

Thanks for your advice, chaps.

Ive heard on the grape vine there is a Japanese specialist just opened up in Milton Keynes - just of J14 somewhere.   I know this isnt much help as I dont even have a name.  Maybe someone on here knows?  Or a search on the net may work.

There is another fantastic garage I can recommend in Bletchley.  Not Jap specialists but the guy really knows his stuff. The amount of electronic gadgets he has there are amazing.  Has a rolling road too.  Ive had my RX down there before plugged into the computer and read fault codes for me.

They should be able to compression test for you

The seller has also found a garage in Watford who can also do the test. We have agreed that if RoTechniks are unable to do it this weekend then the Watford garage will be fine.

Hopefully, the compression test will show that the engine is in good condition.

I have received the compression test results. The front rotor readings are 81psi (5.8bar) for all three chambers/faces on the front and the rear are 82psi (5.9bar), 81psi (5.8bar) and 84psi (6.0bar) at 271rpm.

The engine has done approx. 35,000 miles on a 94 Type R. From what I have read on this forum, it would be better if the readings were higher but as the readings are very even, this should be fine. The tester/garage has also stated, "the test indicates very little engine wear at the time of the test".

I would appreciate your views, from experience, to confirm my understanding or otherwise. I am planning to purchase the RX7 this weekend.

Thanks in advance.

Freddy

Those compression test results are indeed pretty low. Considering the car has only done 35000 miles, you would expect the readings to be in the 7\'s. Aside from the compression readings. How is the rest of the car. Have you checked for wear to suspension, brake disc areas. Hows the overall drive?

It\'s difficult to pin point why the readings are so low. Is the car pretty much standard or modified? Also, I\'m confused on how whoever tested the car said, there is very little wear to the engine.

How often do you intend on using the car?

It seems you feel this FD is the one for you. However, please choose with your head as opposed to your heart - a common mistake most of us make. It will cost you much less in the long run. ;)

Speaking of which, prehaps this car is cheap to begin with?

A little more information, the car was taken to Mazway in Watford (ex Mazda technician) and the car was elecronically tested using Mazda\'s Autocheck machine.

This garage was reccomended by the local Mazda Dealership, who did not have the machine to test.

I am purchasing Luciano\'s RX7- link below:-

The car is in quite a good condition, generally. Visual wear and tear seems to be in keeping with the car\'s age and mileage. I noticed that the front brake discs are not overly worn.

I will use the car at weekends and pershap a few times to and back from work per week. I prefer to walk to work as it\'s only a mile away.

Freddy, I agree with your point re how anyone can tell the amount of engine wear without dismantling the engine. Unless I\'m mistaken, a compression test will only indicate the condition of the apex seals, etc.

My heart tells me that I want an RX7 and my head tells me that Luciano\'s is the best I\'ve seen so far which meets with my spec. I\'d be happy if the engine can get to 50k miles before I get it rebuilt.

Presumably, getting a rebuild before the engine blows is much less costly compared to after wards?

Cheers
