Can all you inteligent people out there explain to me the differences between the 255bhp, 265?? and 280bhp motors?

I know about the efini y pipe flowing better, and the 99 turbos pushing more power (how do they do that as they push the same PSI????)

I\'m in the search for simple mods that give more go (transfering the car from :driving  to  :3gears-rh  !!

HELP ME, MATES ARE STARTING TO KEEP UP WITH THE REX and I want to  :WaveBye  to them again!!!!

No amount of tuning is cheap. Thats the first thing.

To get proper upgrades made you need a mappable ECU. Most people over here go for the Apexi. Now, that needs mapping by a specialist, which costs about £300. However, you need to get it re-mapped for each major modification thats done - or get them done all at once, which over time works out cheaper. However, I have seen evidence of FDs with CAT back, induction kit, and Apexi power FC when mapped kicking out 340bhp at the fly (295bhp at the wheels)

APEXI ECU will be the best mod you will ever do i reckon   apart from a single turbo LOL

best value for money by far
450 for apexi
300 for tune
i have zorst and apexi and boost controller and 293 @wheels

Cheers for the tuning info guys, I\'m planning on going for a PFC, HKS down pipe (coming at xmas some time!!) Decat pipe and probably a larger IC then I think that will do me for a while!!!

Basicaly what I\'m interested in is what the standard mods are (what Mazda did to get the extra 25bhp!) between the 255bhp & 280bhp models?????

Cheers People

Something along the lines of: turbos a little bit more efficient; an increase in boost (~10psi upto ~13psi); tiny mods in the diameter of the exhaust (aiding flow, supposedly); redesigned air intake (became dedicated, rather than a shared one with the intercooler); and no doubt a different map in the stock ecu. Supposedly a bigger rad to, to aid with the cooling, along with the nose cone (bigger openings for the rad and oil coolers), and apparently a slight change to the OMP to improve the oil injection.

If you think about the PFC, a remap gives significant power gains, so what mazda did, was probably the same, but with the stock map (could be wrong - anyone??) A few mechanical changes as above to give a bit more reliability. Doesn\'t take much to knock the fwhp up by a few 10\'s of hp.

Hope that help,

Andrew :Thumbs-up

Now were talking!! This is the sort of info I was after!!!!
Anyone else like to add info????

Fab, Cheers guys

As Andrew says: it was minor tweaks here and there that led to the increases in power. The latest incarnation is mainly to do with the ECU (Also helps that its 16bit ECU over the earlier machines that were 8 bit - post \'95 cars were also 16 bit).

There is a debate over whether the turbos on the 280bhp cars were any different. Some places say there were minor differences made to them for more efficient spooling and reliability. Some other people say that the parts listing for the later turbos and the earlier turbos are the same, and therefore there is no difference between the tubbies.
