As a true independent I find the recent ramblings on the site quite incredible.
It seems that there are many people who have more money than grey cells in their heads! If you are going to play with basic parameters and not monitor what you are doing on any engine the outcome is always the same! Critical parameters like boost and fuelling are the key to this whole issue.
The modern Wankel is a very compact and well-established unit, the designers have already done all the things that you boy racers have done and more. They know that ultimate performance and longevity are always a dream that is never possible. The performance gains are always linked exponentially to useable life of the engine.
Now some of you are going to say that you can do this and that and get away with it, I am saying that if you increase output and then always drive the thing using that extra output you will defiantly end up with a very short overall run time. The wise among you have sussed that if you have the ability to use extra power gains for just a few head turning moments and then drive within the normal parameters you have the recipe for the best compromise.
There has been a lot of criticism of rebuild quality recently, but it has always been levelled after a blow up. Let me say one thing right now, a post mortem on a destroyed engine reveals very little unless you have the expertise of NASA and their budget! If you want to comment on engineering expertise, build quality etc then the engine must be stripped and examined by a third party before it is even run! That is when you can check the flatness of the end plates; tip clearances, housing condition etc.
I suspect the real problem here is simply that some of you just can’t do what you are told when you pick up your new toy and thereafter are looking for someone to blame for your basic stupidity!

Can see where your coming from with this (cant agree or disagree with it though due to lack of experinence), but one of the major points that has been brought up here is the fact that the engine was sold as a street ported engine, where it is now plain to see its not...

quote from kieron...

Can this thread becoming quite lively soon  :rollin

Welcome to the board TecVet... Some interesting points raised in your post, one small concern is that Kieron paid to have things done to the engine... that well... Just didnt happen! Irrespective of how he drove it afterwards or how long it lasted... what was asked of the engine builder and what the engine builder stated were simply lies.

As for McCarthy, I am close friends with him and that car was not right from the start! McCarthy is a firm believer in monitoring everything the engine is doing, his brother builds race tuned and drag bikes for a living so McCarthy has a good background. McCarthy reported straight away his concerns about the over boosting levels and was told not to do anything, NOT BEING A FOOL he sought additional advice and was informed that the whole set up was incorrect and managed to get the boost down enough to get back to the engine builder... (at this point I went back with him to see the outcome) The engineer and his mate had a fiddle and low and behold the engine went BANG a few hundred miles later.

We are all aware of the decreased life of an engine as soon as you put more strain on it, and everyone will agree that monitoring the levels is important... and on that note (shameless plug) I have 3 HKS 60mm Gauges for sale TEMP, BOOST, Oil/Water PRESURE £80 each or £210 for all three... Check out the classifieds on the forum for details under the thread "Not specifically for the rex..." :D :D :D :D

Trex,

I\'m interested to know how many engines you have personally rebuilt using your own machine shop?

I must say that I don\'t completely agree with some of your comments here.
It is perfectly possible to see if a rotary engine was built poorly and contributed to it\'s demise once stripped down without the budget of NASA.
The ones pictured on here are not damaged beyond the point that you cannot see the condtion of the housings at the time of build.
These engines if built and tuned properly can take alot of high stress and power, and they certainly were not designed to just pootle almost everywhere with the very occasional use of revs and power. The RX7 is a pure sports car after all.

Tec Vet,
Welcome to the forum,   i as well as few others feel that your first post may have been missing the point of the thread.

It is stated earlier in the thread that the fact the car blew up is not in question,  the fact that porting and new housings or plates were paid for and not supplied is the fact in dispute.  I dont personally know the in\'s and out\'s of the dispute as i didnt see the first thread and dont know the people concerned.

You seem to be going on about boy racers fiddling with their cars and blowing them up while expecting longevity.  This thread is not about that.

I dont know how long you have been viewing the forum but the subject that you raised has been discussed many times.   I am sure nearly all the members of the club are well aware that if you increase power you will decrease the life of the engine. Even more so if you dont do it properly.

As for your point about Mazda doing all their research and testing, it\'s quite an obvious fact that they have,  but they provide a car that is compramised between a good amount of power but more importantly, reliability and longevity.

I have owned many RX7s and have built quite a few engines (in a machine shop), although i am not a mechanic or Tuner and the engines have only been my own,  i am still learning,  but i own these cars because i want a fast one and if it only lasts 8000 miles, then i am more than happy as it has 475 fwhp.  Needless to say i wouldnt do it to a daily driver.

My last point concerns your comments about boyracers,  all the people i know with very powerfull RX7\'s are over 30 inc me..............

I hope you enjoy the forum and will find it useful but please be mindfull when posting your comments....
400 BHP - 650 KG\'s = 616 BHP Per Ton of Rotary Power

That\'s the way to do it! :Thumbsup!

TRex

I have stripped and built Rotarys for the record...
This does not make me an expert by no means.

But I know from experience and intelligence that you do not need a budget of \'NASA\' or as drastically/dramatically as you made it sound to diagnose internal engine damage!

If this is the case all the good Tuners here, wether it be WGT, re worx,, rx motors, haywood etc having been ripping peeps off for years then, as I know they don\'t have NASA\'s budget!

Actually this goes for MAZDA themselves...  Yeah what do they know!

TecVet,
I think you should read this post before jumping in with comments. I don\'t build engines but I know this very small but curtail bit of information.
If you are charged for parts/work and its not done then you are a person with very little morals, this seems to be the case here. If you read the whole post I think it would become clear.
Well said Carl. You are a well respected engine builder and you know what you’re talking about, an engine can be inspected and faults diagnosed post-Morton, without NASA\'s help!.
It annoys me when a new member comes on here and jumps in with comments that seem very poor (just MY opinion!) and I don\'t really think you are here to benefit the club but to give some kind of support to the people whose workmanship is in question. But that is me making assumptions, I don\'t know who you are so I shall hold any more thoughts as I do hope you have joined this club to benefit the members with your knowledge as others have done.

TecVet, are you in any way associated with the organization at the point of this thread? just sounded like you were putting the boot in from the otherside of the fence.
