After a drive the other day, parked up and was just about to lock the door when i noticed that me key looked bent, i had a proper look using my eyes!!!, and there were two cracks either side about half way up, went in to check the spare and they were the same, i was glad that this hadnt snapped off in the ignition barrel or even the door as i reackon that would be curtains. So went to get one cut. At work i showed my mate, who also owns an FD and he had the exact same thing happen to him!!!!!!!!  Has anyone else found cracked keys???, is it poor design or do all keys eventually get weak areas and crack.

I reckon it\'s to do with the door lock only using the first half of the key...must put a fair bit of stress there.

I insisted on remote central locking with the alarm fitting for this reason.

Mine has done the exact same thing... TWICE!!!!
Luckily i dont use my key in the lock anymore as my alarm unlocks the doors and i have a different, bigger type of key for the ignition.

This happend to me on my old FD a couple of times, best to always have at least 2 spare keys.

twice to me aswell and in total i now have four keys with cracks, got replacaments though from rotaryart £11.00 each if i remember

This has happened to two of mine and I agree with the door lock comment. Poor design. B
Puts too much stress on there.

I have a couple of spares and check them quite regularly.

Forgot to add, if your freshly cut keys feel a little stiff in the locks, give them a good going over with wire wool, it takes the sharp edges off and the keys will work better :chat

Not only that, but you won\'t cut your fingers on the sharp edges either :D bonus :D

Yeap had the exact same thing, then the key snapped.

Thankfully I had 2 new keys cut before it did.

Cheers for posting this, both my keys have slight cracks in them which I hadn\'t noticed before. Time to get some new ones methinks.

Dear G@NDY,
I have had difficulties with keys breaking at the point in the shank that
you indicate. Including one breaking in the ignition barrel of my MX-6!
It is indeed a weak point in the design of the key.
I thank heaven for remote locking and entry on my FD via the immobiliser.
Best wishes,

Yeah both my FD\'s have had keys that had cracks in them like that. Only about £4 for a new one to be cut in town though :)
