Im 21 soon, and in the middle purchasing a 3rd Gen RX (1994) which is highly modified (single turbo running at around 500hp, bodykit, etc. etc.)

Ive been looking around at a few of the more well known insurance companies and although I could probably get insured on a standard 3rd Gen RX it looks like a highly modified one is out of the question.

Can anyone recommend a good company that they have heard of or someone you\'ve had experience wih that will insure a 21y/o on a highly modded RX. I\'ll have 4 yrs no claims and no points. I\'m also willing to look into a second car and only use this for limited miles per year.

Unless you have deep pockets mate im sure with a car pulling 500hp at ur age is going to be almost impossible to find insurance that will be worth it.
Reading the forums most 20-22 year olds will be paying around the 1k mark for unmodded (mostly engine wise) rex`s.

But i wish you well and keep us posted on the progress.

Put yourself in the shoes of an insurer - would you insure a 500 hp FD to a 20 year old?

I think you won\'t find ANY insurer to cover you, but hey - you never know!

Any chance you can get a less modded one? And didn\'t you check insurance before you got into the middle of buying it??

Have you driven an unmodded one yet? I\'m assuming you\'ve already driven the one which you\'re intending on buying.

I would say start off with a fairly unmodded RX. They are still a handful. ;)

I\'m based in the Manchester area so if you do want to try an unmodded one, 480hp RX7 or an all out track RX7 drop me a mail. Atleast that way, you\'d be able to see if an unmodded RX will do the job to atleast a time when the insurers will contemplate insuring you with a 500hp car. :)

Good Luck!!
im 21 and found it hard enough to get a quote on a standard rex although i have found a good one now but thats with no mods   :(

CraigS

Yeah have driven a standard one alot (brother-in-law owns one), I also drive a BMW 645 (333hp) and Merc CL55 AMG (500hp) fairly regularly so used to the power.

I was hoping to sort some kind of classic insurance out, or possibly just track/show insurance as this is what it would be used for mainly.

maximtaylor - And yeah I did think about insurance before buying it, hence why Im only in the middle of buying it and not bought it  :p

GeckoGareth

Craig try these people if you are interested in track use etc...

Egger Lawson 0115 9415255 option 4, 2, speak to Steve, tell him Gareth from Melton Mowbray put you on to them. They seem to be able to insure pretty much anything.

Other good quote I got was with Hoddesdon Insurance Consultants 0845 121 2212

Let us know how you get on.

I use A-Plan who should be able to find an insurer but it\'ll be very pricey.  I\'d be pleasantly suprised if it comes in under £2k.

Just renewed mine with Adrian Flux

21
4 years NCB

Come in at just under 1K

:D

GeckoGareth

That\'s mental Nath, Highway the underwriter for FD\'s through Adrian Flux proper bumped up their premiums this year after a spate of accidents last year (yeah sorry about that!).

G

Nath

Yeah i heard they did ,

I was with them the last 2 years

19 - 20 @ £2300
20 - 21 @ £1300
21 - 22 @ £1000

After the first year it dropped by 1K , ok it only dropped by £300 this time but i cant complain.

Is that on a modifed RX with them declared?

Nath

Yeah , it may be the fact that i live out in the sticks that brings it down.

rx jamie

i pay £990 with elephant, standard *cough* im 22 with one years ncb, 2 accidents (one claimed for 18 k) and 6 points  :D  someone up there likes me lol

Kieron

Elephant are really good, I was insuring my modified MR2 turbo and my RX7 for £1500 @ 21.

Even cheaper now I sold the crappy toyota!

Classic insurance is a con IMHO, you can only do a max of 80miles a day, can\'t carry passengers bla bla bla.

500BHP will be fun in this weather, my 310rwhp kicks me sideways in 4th  :burnout
