Hi,

Ive been flirting with the idea of importing an RX7 from Japan.

I wanted to know what the power output was for the different years so I know what im getting.

am i right in that
uk are 237
91-95 are 255
1995 - 1999 are 265 bhp
1999+ are 280bhp ?

So im thinking if I was to import a Type R from 1995 it would be 265bhp model.

Also what about the tuneability, which one makes for the best tuning potential for the money.

Would it be risky to import one thats already highly modified, ie. if it had single turbo upgrades and fmic etc ... save me the hassle of it!!

Cheers,

Bod.

Oh yeah what kinda 1/4 miles and terminals can they do as standard?  my s13 is currently doing 13.5 @ 105.5 with 275bhp :)

Welcome to MRC  :D

I know its cheaper to import one yourself but not knowing how its been treated or serviced in the past would put me off. Budget for a rebuild, There are lots of vendors on this site who could provide you with a top quality RX7.

In a stock RX7 I was doing 14.5\'s this was in a 1992 Type R, in my modified Type R I can do a 13.6 @ 104 this has just over 280BHP at the wheels but my poor drag launches means I get a 2.5 0 - 60ft so take off about 1sec (stock car should do a 0 - 60 in 1.5) and its in the 12\'s.

Well my personal best in my S13 is 2.15 60ft, and I get the feeling rx7\'s are better to launch as there are NO s13\'s in th 1.x \'s except for richie with 650bhp!

What about the power, Im thinking of going for a post 95 one with 265bhp standard (Type R?)  This is the nice middle ground as the 99+ is way to $$$ for a peasant boy like me.   Also the 92 one comes with less power?

I think if I imported one Id get one already tuned and modified too.  I cant be bothered with standard cars these days, I prefer them to be beasts already, ive spent yonks tuning my s13!!

Also looking at skyline GTR R32\'s as well as rex\'s.  Are Rx7\'s in the same league as supe\'s and skyliners ?  I think the rx7 is by far the nicest looking!

Cheers,
Jon.

Hi

Importing doesnt have to be that risky... we have buyers based out in Japan that can inspect the car make sure everything is sound..this is especially good if you are buying a highly tuned one...make sure u know what you are buying

I would be concerend though if you didnt have buyers based in japan that are happy to check the car out for you..that is realy only the risky aspect...so that something to watch..

if you want anymore advice...feel free to email me  or call me 0792122352 im always happy to help.. and if needs be we can asist you with importing the car...

MattR

Also.. if you are looking for a larger power one.. we have a 450+bhp Sinlge turbo coming in..which i am able to do a keen price on...

Kieron

Better looking, more fun to drive and more unique. RX wins any day.

I know where you are comming from, I wish I had brough a pre modified car, I\'ve had mine rebuilt and street ported so I\'m on the way.

Hi and welcome!

Supra\'s and skylines do fall in the same class as an RX-7. However, then again; a skyline is a completetly different car. An RX-7 does come with a certain wow factor; the rarity in which you dont really see many on the roads and the sound of a rotary when giving it WOT. I have never seen one on the road, except going to events! It all depends what drive style you are after. Being a silvia owner, I\'m sure you\'re not shy with a bit of sideways fun. ;)

With the current import laws, to import a post 1996 is not just difficult, but almost impossible. A 1992 RX-7 and a 1995 can have near the same standard modifications and no one is real faster in noticeable terms than the other. I have owned a few and can say that first hand.

When it comes to importing, it is always the best option to go direct. As often, some importers are never reluctant on buying accident damaged repaired cars for obvious reasons. We provide a personal import service giving you access to the auctions in Japan as well as the dealers stock with a thorough checking over of any potential purchase to preparing and having the car OTR here, ready to be driven away.

It really does come down to what would be the exact power you would require from one and the proposed budget. Without question, buying and already modified one will save you a lot of time and money.

Have you driven these cars before? You are quite local to me and if you so wish then you could come over to see and try a standard\'ish one, a highly modified one and an bonkers all out track car.  Plus others too.  :p

We\'re also taking delivery of another drag car later this week. Running low times consistently. :)

Good luck.

:cool Hi Bodley,

Is this THE bodley that keeps getting banned from sxoc lol. Nice to meet you finaly :p

A 1995 RX-7 is 255bhp and the 1996 and up are 265bhp.

Only the Type R, RS and RZ (Spirit R) from 1999 up were 280bhp.

From 1996 on they used a 16bit ecu insted of the previous 8 bit one

From 1996 they used the round tail lights instead of the sqyuare ones

Some of the earlier RX-7\'s only had 1 oil cooler (think these were 1992-1993 ones but not positive)

Imports usually come over as 1.3\'s giving you cheap tax but expensive insurance being an import

UK ones cost more and tax\'d as a 2.6 I think but you get the cheaper insurance as its not imported

Modification wise they are great and respond well to mods BUT this has to be done carefuly. You cant just remove the cat change the down pipe and back box the car running lean. You will need a mappable ECU for this. Apexi PFC seems to be the one mostly used due tot eh amount of tuners that can tune them and there cost. There are other like the motec (expensive) and teh Greddy E manage (doesn\'t have the same amount of tuning ability as tthe motec or Apexi).

1/4 mile I got a 13.2 on a damp day but that was when I had 290bhp I think maybe a bit less.

The jap tyres they come over to here on dont go very well with our roads. Best bet is to change them but I couldn\'t bring myself to change tyres that were nearly brand new so I kept them. Ive just changed them now to Eagle F1\'s and it drives like a different car now loads more grip. If you like your track days tehn The Dunlop DOJ1\'s are amazing. They have more grip than you have bottle I expect.

If you\'re going to get one already tuned then it really doesn\'t matter what year you get as the power will be up from standard anyway.  For example, my \'92 is currently putting down 293rwhp (~350 fly) so is a long way up on stock.

There are always a number of well cared for modded cars on the forum up for sale.  Many of these are \'known\' cars and will have outstanding service histories at proper rotary tuners.  Check them out - saves the massive and frustrating wait for it to take the slow boat over and you know exactly what you\'re getting.  Also check out the vendors above if you\'re dead set on importing - they should be able to give some good advice even if you don;t buy through them (they\'re nice like that!).

As for comparisons to Superas and Liners...

Have you seen them??? ;)  Both competent cars but both quite big and supras feel heavy.  Both capable of being well tuned but will generally cost the same or more than an FD to tune.  Rebuilds are muich cheaper in the rotary world in general and tuned supes/liners do go kablooey sometimes!

Get a 7.  You won\'t regret it.  Also, get a daily runaround if you need to use a car a lot as the 7 is a tad thirsty.

If you search for one of your early threads on the SXOC you\'ll find this question and many others regarding RX7s has already been answered.
By you.
