I was chatting to a friend of mine while toying with the idea of getting mag alloy wheels to lower the weight of the car as a whole. He mentioned that he heard from somewhere that lightweight mag alloy wheels dont fare well on the rough and poorly maintained roads we have here in the UK. Anyone able to shed light on the issue, fact or fiction?

Some manufacturers will recommend that you xray them every 1-2 yrs for fractures.

Slightly off topic, but IIRC back in the late 60\'s Jaguar had an XK150 with mag/alloy wheels.  They laid it up for a few years then did another top speed run in the car.  One of the wheels collapsed due to age related fractures.  Since reading that I\'ve rather gone off of them. (Although 40 years has now passed so I expect things have improoved a great deal)

I had a set on one of my old scoob\'s a couple of years ago, you would be suprised how much difference they make to the weight.... i was quite shocked!!! They lasted just over a year until i hit a MAHOOSIVE pot hole, well to be honest it could have been a bomb test site!!!, bent and cracked it very very badly..... but due to the bad condition of the road and the fact that i had a digi camera in the car i took all the evidance to the concil and afrter a few months got them to buy me a new wheel....... i did keep them but only for track days and meets stuff like that. they arn\'t great for the roads in the uk as they arn\'t very strong and they wern\'t cheap either!

hmmmm... looks like its true then... Well gotta look at the sliver lining. At least I\'ll be saving lots of cash:) Guess i\'ll have to start looking into light-weight alu alloys. Recomendations to fit an RX8 anyone ?

The Mazdaspeed MS-02s on mine seem to be fine, and they got put through their paces at the Ring this summer. Just weave around the holes !!!!
