Until the insurance pays out the car is still your\'s, to do what you want with.
Depends I suppose on how much they are paying out, and what it is worth to you selling the parts on, or using it to put another one on the road.

How many ex gtir owners here?! Mine was written off, I didn\'t claim but was lucky enough to have a garage to store it in and gradually stripped it down selling off the undamaged parts - made about as much as I would\'ve if I\'d sold the car in it\'s former glory, and kept a few universal bits for the fd too.

they haven\'t paid out on the car yet, they are writing to me soon to make an offer. for some reason the car has been taken to middlesborough which i don\'t quite understand. the accident happened in barnsley and the recovery company took it to doncaster. it was my understanding the car would be there once they had made a decision about whether to write off/repair and if write off, i could go to doncaster and take out the parts i needed. however, i phoned them this week and they told me it had been written off, and the car was in middlesborough where it had been sent for breaking! i\'ve phoned the company in middlesborough and they say to get my headunit/mp3 player/cables etc i have to get the insurance company to fax them the list saying i can have them back, and then they\'ll post them to me. seems ridiculous but i don\'t know what else i can do. as for the wheels, the 2 rears are f***ed completely, well beyond refurbing. the fronts just have a couple of marks on from the accident and could probably be refurbed, but if i did ask to swap the 4 originals for the 2 repairable ones i doubt i would make any more money back off them after paying to refurb than what the 4 originals are worth :(

like you guys say i don\'t think they can break it until i\'ve been paid out so i will try and work out a way to buy the car back if possible. the accident only caused damage to the rear of the car so i think the engine/transmission should all be fine. if they are, how much do you reckon they would be worth (both done 25,000miles from new, no rebuild)?

i think it would cost too much for me to repair the car personally. they haven\'t told me why they decided to write it off, but from what i saw the major panel damage was to the large panel that makes up the 2 rear wings, the roof and the door sills. all the damage was to the driver side rear wing but it would need a whole new panel. it would also need a new tailgate hatch with window, and there were small bits of damage to the spoiler and drivers side of the rear bumber which could probably be repaired. as far as mechanical damage it looked to have ripped the rear drivers side wheel away from where it should have been so i imagine there could be great expense in repairing whatever happened under there. i expect if it had just been those things though they would probably repair it, so i\'m guessing there must have been significant damage to the chassis in that same rear drivers side location for it to be a cat b write off.

sounds like a fair bit of structural damage... your prob better off not repairing chassis are a bugger to get straight if they have been bent!

living over that way im suprised they didnt take it to simpsons near York.. far closer and a top bunch of blokes to boot

then again the breaking it yourself might be a decent idea depends how much they offer to buy it for and how much you reckon you will get breaking.

I would think the engine would be worth a wee bit...

Really sorry for ya mate. Not good.

You havent said what happened. Was it petrol on the road etc ?

Hi

I am sorry to hear about your car.  The main think is you are OK.  As much as we love our cars â€" it is only metal.  You will get another RX â€" we all do.  There are always people with blown engines looking to rebuild / replace the engine.
I know one guy who may be interested in your engine, if you can get hold of it I can get the two of you talking.  You may need to get a compression test …..
Let me know…
You will definitely sell bits here …..

afaik this isn\'t actually 1 panel, it\'s 3 (roof, wings), and the join is covered. I\'ve recently bent the passenger side rear portion of this panel (around the rear light cluster) and was worried about the potential cost of replacing what is basically half the car\'s surface area, but was told it\'s actually multiple panels.

I\'m with Ensign through a broker called Noel Dazely, paying £2650 fully comp. I would have recommended them up until now, so far with the claim they have been far less than helpful. I will update the thread once I have any further news.

To those asking what happened, sorry I forgot to reply sooner. Basically I was on a national limit b road and took a sharp left bend on top of a crest at about 55-60mph. On the exit the front left corner lost grip causing the rear left wheel to slide out and clip the kerb, which spun the car the opposite direction 180 and it went backwards across the other side of the road through a sign post :( luckily no other parties involved though.

Juz

well the current news is that they made me an offer a couple of days after i made that last post, which i have declined. i wrote a letter back explaining why the market value was almost double what they offered me, and gave them 2 weeks to come back with a better figure. i\'m confident that i have a good position now though because i know if they fail to produce again then i will first take it to an ombudsman to try and settle, or if that fails just tell them to send the car back to me and instead of claiming i\'ll fix it myself (which i\'m sure i could do at a much smaller loss than what i\'d be taking if i accepted their first offer).

James S

good luck mate. I hope you get a good settlement for it, otherwise as you say take it to the ombudsman and let them sort it out!  :)

Kieron

You could buy a cheap import with a blown engine, there are enough about, if your insurance offer you 1/2 of the true value accept it on the condition you get your car back, use the money to buy a rolling shell and then you have another rex  :D

I found elephant was the best place for young drivers and insurance, I\'m 21 I have a modified MR2 Tur bo and my sexy rex and I pay £1500 fully comp for the 2, 0 NCD no accidents but then I dont have any points.

Good luck with it mate!

   I\'ll be enquiring with Elephant at my renewal! That\'s a bloody good deal there mate.

Unfortunately mate, a Cat B means that it\'s no longer safe to be put back on the road. Cat B effectively means that it can only be broken for parts. You wouldn\'t be able to get the documents back for it, and so it would be useless
