When i got my FD back in january noticed straight away a really horrible rear folight.  It looks like a universal square one which is just screwed onto the back bumper right next to the exhaust, looks terrible and have had a few comments from mates sayin to get rid of it.  Got a MOT soon so was thinkin of just taking it of after that, i understand you need to have one on the rear of your car for it to be road legal and thats part of the reason why the guy who imported it put it on there.  How have others got around this problem? think i will be ok with not having one after MOT??

many thanks

I think a lot of people re wire the central brake light to become a fog light. :D

is that easy enough to do? or would i be best letting a expert do it

Or, as was done on mine, spray red paint into one of the reversing lights and rewire!

Pretty quick and dirty.

Do as Goose said, and convert one of the reversing lights. Dead simple and quick. Just put my FD through its very first MOT with this fog light "mod" and passed OK.
Lucky for me, when the car was set up for the SVA, the external fog light was drilled and attached to the bumper where the number plate should be. So when I did the convert over to the reverse light, the number plates I had made up nicely cover the hole!

Also, according to the MOT tester I spoke to, you need to have a light in the car to show the fog light is on. My car had a Mazda switch installed in the centre consol, but there wasn\'t any bulb to indicate the fog light was on. So had to wire one in. Personally not sure where it needs to be - I put it on the dash (i.e. in the drivers line of sight) just to be sure.

If you can get a matching switch from something like a 626 then that\'ll be the business.

I\'ve got a very cheap switch which lights up when the fog light it on. I think it\'s a standard Halfrauds part - but it\'s saves a lot of hassle.

Mate,

When I bought my car off Andrew at Jimmys he had wired in the centre brake light to becom the fog light. I didnt like the fact (after seeing a few decent RXs with the brake light in the centre coming on) mine was off.

My dad went to Maplin and bought some bits so now it is normally a brake light unless I turn the fog light switch on and it then becomes a fog light thats always on.

When I get home I\'ll ask what he bought and post it on here. Looks much nicer than one of those hideous add on fog lights that gets screwed to the bumper.

or you could just say **** the law.. stupid foglamp..we have fog once a year if that!! i put mine on for the mot then remove it after mot..i made an "s" shape bracket and attached it to the petrol tank bolt, then run the wire to the illuminated switchthe simple ideas work the best.

must say that the center brake light and part time fog lamp is a very good idea..never thought of that1.. i suppose all you need are a couple of 12volt diodes.

Mine had a nasty square fog light by the number plate when I bought it. I did the conversion of the offside reverse light with a little variation. I removed the offside light assembly and removed the reverse lamp unit from it. I then cut the white lens part off the unit and cut out a red section of lens the same shape from the nasty square thing that I removed. I glued the red piece onto the back of the original lamp unit, reassembled and wired to a fog lamp switch.  Wehe a factory look fog light! And it got through an MOT.

when I got mine it had a fog light fitted into the rear bumper so it is flush... not screwed onto a bracket hanging on underneath... with a switch by your left knee with light on it...

works perfectly, looks good and even other poeple have commented on the \'niceness\' of it...

mmust be simple to install just the running of the wire might eb a bit of a problem...

will post pics if it helps...

Mine has a switch that turns the RHS brake light on which isn\'t ideal I don\'t think, i\'d much rather it was the centre light. I thought about getting the RX8 fog lamp installed as it\'s quite a nice rotor shape, might still do it but its one of those non urgent jobs that I might get round to one day. Far more important things to spend money on at the moment.
