Porting increases the size, and thusly the time the port is \'open\' within the combustion cycle, this allows more air/fuel (if the porting is on the induction side) mixture to enter the engine and faster expulsion of the exhaust gases. (exhaust side)
Thats just a very basic overview, I think its 90% right too! :D  Also bear in mind that larger ports extend the time the port is open which has other knock on effects :wave

As for cost, how long is a peice of string?  Porting requires a full strip of the engine and a steady hand. Ametures can easily cut into the water jacket, so its a skilled job.
Type in \'porting\' in the MRC search function and have a read, you should get an idea of prices there too.

Kewl cheers bud, well the cars in for a full rebuild and someone suggested i have it ported while its there, the engines getting sent away for the rebuild and im sure its Jimmy thats doing it :).

So does porting give you more power then? but a use alot more fuel? lol not so good on the techincal side lol

Basically, the more air you can flow, the more fuel vapour it can contain.

More air and fuel = more power (its a little more complex than that, but you get the drift)

I cant say what it will do to the fueling, It depends entirely on each individual application.

depending on the severity of the porting, it will also affect the way the car idles. Mine \'hunts\' between 800-1500rpm on idle but I have a reasonable sized bridgeport on the secondaries and a fairly subtle street port on the primaries. See: http://www.monito.com/wankel/porting.html for a simple (ish) explaination. It makes a big difference in how the power is delivered as well as outright power, my understanding - which is a little basic - is that the more extreme the porting, the less power in the low rev range you would have the power increases happen in the upper power band.

89 Black FC3S Turbo II
1/2 Bridge port   Microtech LT10s   TII Conv Aluminium Bonnet & Leather seats   Koni Shocks Pi Springs   De-catted 3" exhaust
GT4088 turbo   Walbro fuel pump   1000cc injectors   custom V-Mount   Blitz Boost Controller (ok so the boost controller is still to fit)

Loud? Hell yes! :D

Porting  costs around £500 if you\'re having your engine rebuilt for a street port.  In terms of fuel economy, the heavier your right foot the worse it is.  Suffice to say, any form of porting will potentially increase power, and more power means more fuel.

Ok just a few things before i decide lol.. if i get a street port, will i need to buy an uprated ecu unit? and if so what unit and how much will it cost me :)

What sort og bhp will i gain from a street port?
