Stu, they made a twin turbo just before the FD. It was classed as the Turbo II.

Turbo II\'s are single turbo\'s ... its just a name

The ONLY (Standard :D )  twin turbo RX7\'s are the 3rd gen ones

as for the reason behind the II theres a bit of a debate

Is it because they were fitted with a twin scroll turbo or is it to seperate it from the 1st gen turbo sold in Japan ?

The T2 is a singe turbo, Its the Twin scroll (Divided turbo) it means with the Two bit. Thats why the pre 89 cars where not called Turbo 2\'s as they did not have twin scroll turbos.

The only Rx7 that was twin turbo\'d was the Third gen.

Hi,
After all this time, i think i will put a spanner in the works:p Towards the end of 1st Gen production in Japan, Mazda experimented with a production turbo charged FB. In 87 when the first 2nd Gen turbo emerged it was called the Turbo II. In Japan all series 4 TurboII are badged GT-R, whilst all Series 5 TurboII are badged GT-X.
S4 being 86-89, S5 being 89-92.  All S4 turboII have twin scroll turbochagers, but not the S5. There are a few other differences between the two, to the body, aswell as the engine.
I hope this puts the record straight.

You are wrong.

Turbo II name came up because in japan there was Turbo first gen. So in 1986 they came up with Turbo II. And u are wrong in twin scroll as well. Only pre 89 cars (86-88 TII) does have twin-scroll. 89-91 does have modified exhaust manifold and turbo and NO twinscroll.

:)  I\'ve noticed before now the 89- has twin waste gates does that have anything to do with it? ;)

I think the T2 thing is just a name as there was never a Gen 1 Turbo only the Elford kit but i think there is a lot of Guessing going on.

I think the best theory is that it is a Turbo and a second gen so its a Turbo 2.

89 on is twin scroll too

Hello,
Sorry, but you are wrong on this one. Twin scroll uses an actuator to open and close a flap inside the manifold. This directs the gases with more force through the primary port on the turbine housing, for quicker spool up. At a certain pressure, the actuator pulls the flap back to let the gasses enter through the smaller secondary port. This is a crap system, as spool up is not that much quicker and inhibits high flow higher up the rpm range.
Only S4 TII have this twinscroll system. The S5 has larger wastegate and flap, and slightly different turbine blades, for increased efficency.

John.

Chris u are as well wrong, there WAS first gen turbo sold in Japan (and that was not Elford kit)

definetly a 1st gen turbo ... the elford was just a bolt on effort without the lower compression ratio and different porting of the Mazda version (the turbo 12a was taken from the early cosmo) the 1st gen turbo was also the first car to use the beefier suspension used in our MK3 RX7 and the GLS-SE in the states ...

1st gen Turbo
