Hi,

I\'m looking for a bit of advice on running my engine in after a rebuild.

I\'ve got a \'93 Type R RX7, which had a rebuild done at the end of last year. Have done 500 miles in it since then and am just about to get an oil and oil filter change.

The advice from RX Motors (who did the rebuild) was to take it easy (keep it under 5000 revs) for 500 miles, then get an oil and oil filter change. Then take it easy for another 500 miles and then after that i\'d be ok.

However i\'ve heard others talk about the running in period being up to 3000 miles after a rebuild.....can anyone give me a bit of advice on this please.

John-Paul, the first 1000 miles is for bedding in new seals, any miles after that is just for sealing the gaskets and such in.

I wouldnt have gone up to 5000 rpm on the first 1000 miles. Bit high IMHO. But then RX Motors are the ones that have to support the engine.

Fish,

I should have said in my post that they told me to keep it under 5000 but i\'ve kept it under 4000. Trying to be careful with it.

You got any advice on rev limits etc that I should be sticking too up to 1000 miles and beyond that?

Having had an engine built by Tim a while back and another one being done by Geff at the moment I would say always take the advice of your engine builder.  I suspect you\'ll find they have their own preferences for running in and this is shared to their respective customers who get engines rebuilt with them.

Unsurprisingly Tim gave me the same advice.  I suspect that when I pick my car up from Geff\'s in a couple of weeks he may something different - who knows :D

Cheers for your reply,

Is it the same engine you are having rebuilt? Or is it a different car?

I\'m just trying to get as much information as possible on this, because obviously i\'d like the engine to last as long as possible.

Tim Rebuilt and ported mine and he also said 500 miles under 5k then oilchange then keep it under 5k for at least another 500 miles or so. I\'ve now done about 6000 trouble free miles!

Loud? Hell yes! :D

Pip basically said the same with mine. He also said don\'t open the throttle up completely for the run in period. Most of it is common sense really. Just cruise around and give it time to bed in. I\'m coming up to about 5k and its running brill :)

As said above, all builders have their own way of running in engines.

I did 500 miles below 3000rpm with 0 boost, then per 100 miles I gave it an extra 1000rpm still with no boost. After that slowly adding boost.

Oil changes were performed as per Carls specifications. But then I have used this process on a couple of other engines that I have run in before. (Non-rotary ;))

I got told the same sort of thing by the guys at RoTecniks. Not to open up the throttle fully and keep it under 4500rpm for the first 1000 miles. Have got past this now and slowly winding it up every now and again, although still keeping it pretty sensible. So far so good :)

I got a letter for them saying that i\'m now due another service, but i got the oil and filter changed at around 500 miles (have now done 1500 approx) which was only 6-8 months ago! is this right? I thought it was every 3000 miles miles for an oil change.

As has been stated before it is best to follow the engine builders instructions since you have your warranty with him.If you have any queries then just give Tim a buzz,he will be more than happy to help I am sure.

In case you\'re interested (unlikely) the advice for the Renesis is to use the full rev range, but never on full throttle, for the first 600 miles or so. (Boost doesn\'t come into it, obviously) Avoid long periods at same revs (eg motorway - if you must do motorway, consider 60 then 80 then 60 in 4th for a bit and so on)

In practice tho they don\'t get proper loose until 3-4000 miles and I can\'t imagine the 13B is much different in that respect.

OTOH if you drive like a girl everywhere you\'ll never actually get it bedded in, and worse, you\'ll coke everything up. Plugs get dirty v quickly in rotaries...

How do they know when you need an oil change? Do they drive your car? I dont think so.

Yes oil changes at 500 miles for a new engine, then every 3000 miles.

Both the 13B\'s I\'ve run in were treated with kid gloves for the first 1000miles, oil change at around 500-750, rev limit of 4000 rpm, but no long periods at the same engine speed.  Took about 3000miles for the engine to really loosen up and come on song.  Last unit had about 10k on it B4 I sold the car and it still seemed to be getting better and better :D
Just have some mechanical sympathy and make sure you do as the builder asks and you should be fine :)

Same car, same engine.

Popping a tip had nothing to do with the quality of the rebuild.  It was stock first time around and then I whacked up the boost etc running through the stock SMIC.  One very hot day after a load of heat soak and WOT in 3rd at about 6,500rpm she popped a corner.  Wasn\'t expecting it, but am completely unsurprised, reckon intake temps were around the 60-70 mark... oops.  Expensive lesson, but well learnt :)

Cheers for everyone who\'s posted on this subject.

One more question for you guys.

I\'m going to get an Apexi Power FC put in at some point and have it mapped on a rolling road.

Am I gonna be able to have this done after a 1000 miles or would it be best to wait until after 3000?
