Quote from: A7NTYI take it it\'s going to be a drag car. V8 will be a lot heavier than a 13B and the weight distribution will be all wrong for track purposes - well it would take a LOT of work to get it to handle well without masses of understeer anyway. Cool project though, good luck but in my eyes its an engine downgrade. :)

Ant.

how much additional weight are we talking here ? stock engine & bits removed v v8 + new bits installed ?

nikp

Also, depends upon the make of the V8 - maybe it\'s an all alloy block. I don\'t know about these american engines much - usually they\'re cast iron, but you never know! The rover V8 for example is all alloy - makes it really light!

rxv8

yes but to be fair you would have to spend 8,000 plus to get ant decent performance from that engine...i have used a 5.7 chevy sbc,its virtually standard just has 327 hi pi heads and a cam...= 347bhp and 368 torque...i have not built this to drag,or track,i like v8s and i like the rx7,hence the project...as far as weight distribution goes if you look at the pics in this thread where the dummy engine sits i think you will find it sits as far back as the 13b,maybe a little further...so it should handle fine...as when you get down to the weight difference between the two its only a matter of the weight of a person....anyway i am sure there will be plenty of critiscm and people not liking the car,and ye it wont be as fast as a lot of you single turbo boys...but i like it...:)

i think rx7 and v8 makes for one sweet motor.anyone thats heard a yank v8 will have to admit it is superb, only one equiv is tuned impreza boxer with straight thru exhaust and these to looks of rx7  :eek  :eek what a car wld love to see and hear finished result

done some reading on this (bored as hell at work today) and this is quite appealing actually, no engine rebuilds and keeping a very close weight distirbution to stock. weight wise there is very little difference if you take into account all the items you would loose with the rotary setup out. very common hybrid amongst yanks.

got a few Q\'s for you rxv8:

1. assuming that you are not using hinsons kit since you have to customise the hood due to clearance issues, which wouldnt have been an issue with the kit. what kind of work was done or another kit used ?

2. any issues with steering rack length

3. was the engine, box, harness and ecu imported from the US by yourself or is there a local company who sourced these parts?

4. will you be kind enough to do a full write up when things are up and running? I realise that pics are available but those in UK considering a similar hybrid would be very interested in your progress  ;)

more one reads, more options open up.... can\'t use "darling this only costed £50" when it comes to rex mods  :flamed

ANSWER
right i think you are confusing engines,i am using a 5.7 chevy sbc with a 600 cfm 4 barrel carb...the common engine swap in the states in the fd3s is the chevy ls1 and the hinsons kit...when fitting the sbc in the fd3 you do have hood clearence probs as the air filter comes through the hood by about 2 inches...this is because you cannot get the front pulley of the sbc any lower than the steering rack which sits very high on the fd3 set up...but thats the only major upset really.
2. any issues with steering rack length
ANSWER
no issues with the lenght of the rack as its standard..

3. was the engine, box, harness and ecu imported from the US by yourself or is there a local company who sourced these parts?
ANSWER
engine and box built in uk by a chevy specialist, and box is a th350 3 speed auto...with a manual valve body conversion...which is nothing short of awesome, means you still have three gears, but the shifter is spring loaded to return to the centre after each shift and you dont have to take your foot of the gas to change gear,so its basically a cheapish tiptronic conversion...

4. will you be kind enough to do a full write up when things are up and running? I realise that pics are available but those in UK considering a similar hybrid would be very interested in your progress  ;)
ANSWER
i will ad more pics as the car progresses,i am hoping to have it running and driving within the next couple of weeks....

i know that people like rx7s cause of the rotay difference...but its a shame theres not any more people that are prepared to do this...as it does not have to be expensive... :3gears-rh

The Wizard

aaaaah, now your setup is clear.. thanks for the info, looking forward to see and hear it running soon

btw, whats the output on this engine ? 0-60 etc ?

rxv8

347bhp /368 torque....standard with a cam swap...

Is yours the red rx7 I saw at the garage in Birmingham this afternoon?
If so it sound absolutely awesome especially when you put your foot  when leaving. There is not better sound than a angry v8

johnf

If it wasn\'t there is a red RX in the B\'ham area that has a big V8 in from one of those new Vauxhall muscle saloons. Same lump as a Vet I think.

Met him at a pub meet, must say it fitted in very well and looked the dogs.
