Good evening all.

I\'m looking for help to try to locate a tinkling/rattling noise from under my FD.

It happens only when turning right, under power (even a little), and gets louder the harder the turn.  It\'s a very light metalic tingling sound, sounds to me like I\'m dragging a ratchet or breaker bar along underneath me.

I\'ve checked for things dragging, loose heatsheilds, break disc gaurds etc.  Had the wheels off to check the arches, and suspension parts.  And today I got a garage to put it up on a ramp so I got a good look underneath.  The only area I couldn\'t check was the propshaft behind the exhaust.

Anyone else had a similar noise in the past?  Any other suggestions?

Thanks.

Have the wheel bearings checked, and take wheel off and check brake pads, they have a metal shim that vibrates when low, usually have touched brakes when coming to corner so maybe worth a look.

Ok will do.

The front discs and pads were new 5 months ago (and not many miles), so I\'ll check on the rears tomorrow afternoon.

Thanks to you both.

Well I checked the discs, pads, bearings, and anything else I could see under the car, but nothing seemed to be at fault.

Then at the weekend I was passing through town, and as I pulled up at some lights I heard something metal fall from my car.  The noise has stopped now! :D

Thanks for the earlier suggestions though.

And now for some gratuitous \'just polished\' pics....

...ok 1 more....

Simon,

Hi mate... looks like a heat shield has dropped off. I\'m not sure how worried you are about putting it back on, but I\'ve attached these two pictures to give you an idea of where it could have come from, if that\'s any help.

It *could* be the heat shield that wraps around the large drum (brake drum I think?) towards the top left (looking at the car from the front) of the engine bay.

Or... it could be another one which is situated closer to the turbo pack, I think from memory, is actually connected to the other turbo pack heat shields. Because of the heat that gets generated in that area from the turbo\'s, the bolts holding the heat shield on would have probably rusted away, causing the shield to work loose and rest on the steering rod. I don\'t have a picture of the heat shield itself, but I have a picture of where it goes.

TonyBlair

You call that an exhaust?! I challenge you to \'backfires at dawn\'.  :rollin :rollin

Just teasing mate. Love the bodywork on your car, doesn\'t look like so much as a stone chip! Very nice.

Incidentally, how loud is your exhaust? Mine\'s disgustingly loud, I really want to get it changed to something quieter, but I don\'t want to restrict the airflow. Your backbox looks like it could have a decent sized muffler tucked under there?

All the best,
Jon

Kieron

disgustingly loud is good :D :D

Nice cars, both of you!

WeasleRx7

Thanks Jon, Kieron

Jon, to be honest I\'m not at all fussed about returning the heatshield to where it came from, I\'m just happy the embarrassing clanking noise has stopped!  Afterall it is only a small heat sheild.  I\'ll keep it in the shed though, just in case.

The backbox is a Longlife Exhaust.  I had it made a few months ago as the old one just wasn\'t doing anything for me (too quiet).  It\'s a 5" tail pipe with a 6" muffler and it\'s quite loud.  A few of the residents around my workplace have made formal complaints.  But I don\'t think its too bad a low revs.

As for a backfire showdown?  Sure, anytime!  I keep trying to get the wife to drive it with me following in her car,  I want to check for flames!  Although I think it\'s all pop and no show.

Probably not worth putting the heat shield back, well, not considering the work involved.

"loud is good"... true, but not when the police want to charge (fixed penalty fine) you for the privilege. My neighbours haven\'t complained yet (that I know about), but it\'s only a matter of time. My car port resonates the sound like a base cone, the noise shakes my neighbours windows

"I want to check for flames!"... lol :rollin   Been there before, not with the Rex though (still have the cat), I was following my mate in his Skyline looking out for those all-important flashes of light coming from the exhaust - oh how pleased he was when I confirmed the flames :rollin
