Hi guys,

Those of you have noticed my post about removing my turbo\'s (http://www.mazdarotaryclub.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=12633) will know about the problems I\'ve had with my Rex.  :(

I\'ve sent my twins off to a local company, Colchester Fuel Injection. They only refurbish Bosch turbo\'s, not Hitachi, so they\'ve sent the twins off a company up North to who can refurbish them.

So I get the call this morning (they were suppose to get back to me last week) and the bloke says "bad news mate, we\'ve phoned around all over Europe to get the parts but can\'t get hold of the spares. The problem is you\'ve got "impact damage", and we can\'t get the parts to replace the damaged bits". He said he would explain what the problem is a bit better when I pick the turbo\'s up.

So I\'m thinking, maybe I can take the turbo\'s to another turbo company to see if they have the spares or whether they have cheap replacement turbo\'s, or maybe I can buy brand new turbo\'s or a big\'ish single... but the thing that\'s really concerning me at the moment is the comment the bloke made; "impact damage". What has caused this damage... it\'s got to be a broken rotor tip right?!

So I\'m after a bit of advice please... suppose I get new turbo\'s. How would I diagnose a broken rotor tip? Would a compression test reveal a problem?

Thanks,
Jon

Carl

Hi,
Your car may have received the damage prior to getting the engine rebuilt.Or the turbo pack may have been from a car that had a blown engine sometime in the past.
Buy a secondhand set of turbos,(Turbo Pack) from one of the specialist\'s.
The people that you have sent the turbos too are right about there not being any parts available.

Carl

Is the \'impact damage\' on the exhaust side? I know in your other post you had a picture of the primary turbo\'s intake turbine which was danaged. Chances are if your motor had spat an apex seal out through one of the exhaust ports you\'d know about it! Plus you\'d have a hard time getting her to run. Anyways, a compression test will defo reveal if one of you apex seals is shot...you\'ll get a zero reading for two of the rotor faces (assuming that only one seal is cracked).
Anyways, as for your turbo predicament....seeing as you\'re gonna have to spend some cash either way, I\'d be tempted to go the single route. Source all of your major components (e.g turbo, manifold etc.) from the states, the weak dollar means there\'s some bargains to be had! Check out //www.cheapturbo.com for a start.

Hi Carl and Millspeed, thanks for the replies.

Carl, can you supply second-hand turbo\'s?

MillSpeed, thanks for the link. However I\'m not sure I\'m ready to tackle a single conversion - it took me three days just to get the twins out.

At the moment I\'m really trying to figure out a \'plan of action\' to get the Rex back on the road - I\'m not sure where to start at the moment. I\'ve nearly run out of patience with dealing with the continous problems I\'ve had with the car - I\'m just about ready to roll her off the end of the pier and forget she existed :(

I\'m thinking buy/fit second-hand turbo\'s, and then take the car up to a specialist to find out what killed the turbo\'s, and find out what else if anything needs attention.

What concerns me about doing this is there is no rotary specialists within 70 odd miles of me. So I\'d have to drive the car a fair distance to get it looked at. Potentially making problems worse if I have lost an apex seal.

What to do... what to do

I am just installing a single in my FD at the moment. Believe me you have done the hard part, fitting the single is a doddle. All this comes at a price though, as you have the cost of the turbo the fuelling upgrades and ECU.

I have my old twins available if your interested, these were working fine on my car before I removed them. I will have to make some enquiries to see what they are worth first though.

I also have a set of twins , good, for sale.

i may be after a set of twins (complete pack if possible)
my turbo manifold has a few hair line cracks (not as bad as i\'ve seen on others) how much would you be looking for plus an approx milage would be helpful.
Thanks
Andy

At the risk of getting into a bidding war with Andy  ;)  .... how much, and what mileage is on them?

A good way to feel for damage, is to take the rest of the manifold off the side of the block and stick your finger inside the engine. You should be able to feel the bottom lip of the exhaust port, this should be smooth and have a slight bevel (ie not a sharp edge). If you can feel gouges like uuuummmm like a burning hot piece of metal has been shot out of it. Then it\'s had it. Mind your fingers if you decide to turn the engine round by hand, the rotors come round faster than you think and will have your mits off!!! Another thing you can feel is the tips themselves as they pass by the exhaust port, they should feel shiny and have a good springy feel when pressed in. I\'ve only ever done this with the engine out , so I don\'t know how much of an arse it\'s gonna be reaching in the engine bay and trying to feel inside the engine. Compression test will tell all though.

hope that helps:)

Good Post Matt but as you say DONT TURN THE ENGINE with your fingers in there or you will loose your finger TIPS as well the ones in the engine!.
All the best Clive

Hi Matt,

I\'m really glad you posted that, thanks. I was thinking about doing what you have suggested, but I didn\'t know if it was a good idea or not. I\'ll give it a try.

Cheers
