Poor running/ cat heat warning light

I bought a 1995 model rx-7 with 58.000 mile on he clock and had an engine rebuild by the boys at hurley engineering, coventry. The new engine has done 2000 miles and recently the heat warning light for the cat has come on. The engine power doesn`t  seem at its full and the idol revs are always up and down and even sometimes cuts out completely. There is also a problem with starting the car once everything is warmed up. Had an m.o.t the other day and my exhaust heat melted the emission testing probe, mr garage man wasn`t to happy. He reckons the cat is knackerd and maybe causing the problems. What do you clever peolpe think? cheers,

Sounds more like an air leak to cause the bouncy idle. Might be worth checking all the little pipes are still plugged on to something.

As for the MOT centre\'s pipe, just tell him tuff as rotary\'s run hotter than normal boring cars.

Had a  look at all the pipes, from what i could see nothing was loose or off... but now my car wont even start.......the anger swells!!!!!

Hot starting problems can be a sign of uneven compression. Mine has similar symptoms though is does start bang on when cold.

As I understand it often the rear goes first due to the heat generated in an enclosed area hence the unevenness. I\'m sure someone will be along to correct me if I\'m wrong there.

Generally however this coupled with your other symptoms tend to mean that the outcome is a rebuild. Get it compression tested by someone other than Hurley so you know it\'s an independant opinion, mine was 7.10 7.25 7.00 at the front and 5.60 5.55 5.55 at the rear so whilst the front is good the rear is the wrong side of marginal.

IIRC Hurley offer a guarantee with their rebuilds so it shouldn\'t hit you in the pocket twice though you do have the inconvenience of having it off the road again.

I HAVE HAD THIS PROBLEM ASWELL IS IN GETTIN SORTD AT THE MOMENT TURN OUT THAT THE AIR PUMP WASNT WORKIN SO IT WASNT DOIN ITS JOB AND GOT TOLD THAT THE CAT PIPE IS BLOCKED WAITIN FOR THE DE-CAT PIPE TO GO ON N C HOW IT RUNNS.

I WAS POINTIN OUT TO MY SPECIALIST THAT THE HEAT THAT COMES OUTA THE REAR END IS CRAZY NO WAY COULD U STAND NEXT TO THE TAILPIPE CRAZY TEMP, HE SED IN RETURN SHOULDINT B THAT HOT I JUST LEFT IT WITH HIM!

WILL LET U KNOW HOW BAD THE CAT PIPE HIS TRY N GET SOME PIC FOR YOU.
