Can anybody please tell me what size the speakers are in the front doors of a 3rd gen?

Fish

Scuttle, the FD uses odd sized speakers, 7*5. NEC and Kenwood make speakers that size from memory, but they are not cheap.

Are they round, or oval like 6x9\'s?
If they\'re round I think ive seen a converter that lets you fit normal sized 5" or 6" ones

The speakers are round but there isn\'t much depth to play with.

If you\'re after component speakers, Infinity Kappa 50.5\'s will fit - just! The cheapest I\'ve seen them for is about £125 form the place below. (The website\'s not very flash but they\'re pretty cheap and they deliver very quickly.)

The only downside to the Kappas is that the tweeter grills are silver but its easy enough to change that.

(Drop me a line if you need to know the dimensions of the rear speakers as I have those out at the moment.)

Cheers,

Steve

Yeah it was a set of 5" components i was hoping to fit. I\'ll get the dimensions of the infinitys and check it against the ones im after, thanks for that.

That would be helpful too, I was thinking about putting some decent 6 x 9s in th back, rears not too much of a problem though cos I could get a custom parcel shelf, but would save a bit of time and money if old one could be converted :)

What sort of speaker set up are you installing at the mo?

cheers

Hi Andy,

I\'ve attached the dimensions of the Infinity 50.5\'s which I got sent from Inifinity customer services.

I assume it\'s the same for all FD\'s but in my (UK) car, the speaker is mounted in a plastic moulding. To get the Infinities to fit you\'ll need to cut away a little bit of the moulding to allow the magnet to protrude further into the door. (On my car there\'s about 3mm of clearance between the speaker and the window runner.)

The tweeters can be flush or surface mounted and although I don\'t normally like cutting-up trim, I\'m planning to flush fit them into the door - just below the window. I saw another FD with them there and they looked factory fitted.

The rear speakers are mounted on a frame (see my next post) and the cut-out dimensions are as follows:

Cut-out Length - 7.5inches
Cut-out Width - 5 inches
Mounting Depth - 55mm
Magnet Dia - 65mm

Please apply a slight tolerance to the length and width figures as the speaker is screwed and glued in place and I don\'t want to destroy it just yet. I made a note of how much clearance there is around the rear of the magnet but I\'ve misplaced it and the car is in the bodyshop at the moment. E-mail me later if you need to know. (Think there is at least 15mm of rear clearance and 20mm of side clearance around the magnet.)

I can\'t quantify how much effect it will have but you may want to take the opportunity to pack the rear wheel arches with soundproofing to absorb some of the road noise.

Are you planning to fit an amp?

I believe the rears are 6"x8", and pioneer sell some that fit.

ScuttleRX

Thanks for that, very helpful mate.

Im not planning on fitting an amp yet, just wanna upgrade the speakers. More interested in bodystyling and engine mods at the mo, but I might do a proper install over the winter :)

Scuttle, have a look here Max\'s Website

I\'ve just got a set of these exact speakers, how did you bolt them in as the screw configuration is different, is there some sort of adaptor you can buy?

All depends on what you want in the long run....  If you are planning a big ice install then i would go bigger up front.  I have just fitted a set of 6.5" top of the range diamond components up front.  Ditched the rears and i run 2 10" JL 3 subs.....sounds great.  If your get a set of good quality front speakers there is really no need for the rears.....  but some people may have different opinions...

Cheers
