Tintin

Went out to start my car earlier as I was going away to see some friends for the night and it wouldn\'t start , it turned over on the starter motor fine but it wouldn\'t fire , I might have been imagining it but I think I could smell fuel , does this sound like flooding ? its never flooded before and always starts first time everytime

I didn\'t have time to have a look at it before I left so I had to take the van , I\'ll have a look when I get back tomorrow

If this is because it flooded will it have sorted itself out by tomorrow or will I have to go through the de-flooding procedure ?

If this doesn\'t sound like flooding any ideas ?

Yep sounds like it has flooded to me:(. First thing tomorrow is take the fuel or ecu relay out, turn it over a few times and see if it starts after you\'ve put the relay back in. If not then take plugs out and clean em up etc etc following the procedure you mentioned.

Hope you get it sorted tomorrow,

Paul:)

Paul, I\'ve had a thought....the bottom plugs are a bitch to get to. I wonder if it would be ok to just remove and clean the easy access plugs and let the engine start on them? As soon as it fires the others will clean up pretty quick on their own.

Could do Pete, don\'t see any problems doing that, well worth a try, although they\'d be the trailing plugs which are a colder plug (or could be) and have a smaller hole to ignite the fuel.

However if you jack the car up, all 4 plugs are easy to get to and remove. Another point to add is to make sure your battery is up to scratch, a good bat in a fully charged state is definitely a good thing when trying to start a flooded rotary.

Paul:)

Before you do all that work, its worth trying to start it with the accelarator pushed all the way to the floor. This stops the fuel being injected.

Carl

A new set of plugs probably would not go amiss too.

Had a similar problem recently.  Replaced the 9\'s in the leading holes with 7\'s nad car has started 1st time everytime since.

Cheers for the advise fellas , haven\'t had chance to take the plugs out yet , I was very rough on sunday and didn\'t fel up to living never mind fixing my mota

Just recently put new plugs in and put 7\'s and 9\'s in , typical isn\'t it , had 9\'s all round before and never had a problem , now I\'ve put the correctly specified plugs in I have problems

I\'ll get it sorted if I get home while its still light , but it will probably have to wait till next weekend , its not going to have any adverse affects leaving it flooded all week is it ?

Carl

did you put the plugs in the right way?
The 7\'s go on the bottom and the 9\'s ontop.
Also are your plug leads round the right way?

Carl

Tintin

Yeah pretty sure things are all proper and correct , changed the plugs one at a time so the leads should be fine and I\'m pretty sure I put the plugs in the right way ,

Well actually I must have got everything right because she was running fine after I changed the oil and plugs

olly

you should definatly try the accelerater down trick as it worked for me. I had to do it a few times then BANG and a big cloud of smoke and hey presto car was running

Tintin

Well I finally got chance to have a play trying to start up my baby ,

First attempt I forgot to plug the leads back on before trying to start her , DOH !! , had to start again

Second attempt almost fired up but then the bettery started struggling even with the jump leads on , started again

Third attempt decided to leave the plugs out overnight to make sure the fuel has evaporated

Couple of things I want to check though

1 - is it okay just to dry the plugs on the hob or do it need to clean them up ? they are blackish but I don\'t think its oil maybe just carbon

2 - how the hell do you get oil in through the plug holes ? and how much do I need to put in ? could not putting the oil in be the reason she didn\'t start second time ?

3 - what do you suggest if I still can\'t start her , does it sound like a tow to WGT ?

Why not just try to tow start it?
If you do then tow it for a we bit and put your foot down on the accelerator pedal being very careful that if your car does start it will try to lurch forward.
2nd gear is the best way.Don\'t forget to put your ignition on so as not to get the steering locked.
If you need some pointers then feel free to call me.

She\'s alive !!!!

Wahoo , went ouside in the freezing cold this morning , wrapped up in my overalls , got the jump leads on from the van used a syringe ( without a needle obviously ) to get a bit of oil in through the plug holes , popped the plugs back in and rotated the engine

At this point I didn\'t have very high hopes , anyway I poped the leads back on and put the EGI fuse back in , this was it do or die time if this didn\'t work I was going to try bumping it down the hill as I didn\'t fancy trying the tow start

Anyway here goes I thought , fingers crossed and turned the ingnition on ......... a second or so later she fired into life , clouds of whitey gray smoke billowed out of the exhaust , she was idling fine but smoke was still pouring out the exhaust , oh dear I thought , but by the time I had got the wheel back on and the car back on the deck and tools away it had practically stoped , few , went out for a spin and all seemed fine

Well I hope this isn\'t going to be a regular ocurrance , but at least I know she\'ll start with a little tinkering , I\'ll get Pip to do a compression test next time I\'m over a WGT just to make sure nothings wrong , but what a pain
