Thanks for the report on the race Jon.

4th overall! - Excellent result and a VERY impressive laptime for a standard engined RX-8  :)

Glad to hear he had no oil burp issues - I know he fitted the Essex Rotary sump baffle plate back in February, so it looks like that has helped. Thankfully, Castle Combe doesn't have the left hand corners that bring on the fule cut issue, as I know he's had issues with that on some previous races.

I think i may have got the 4th overall wrong....thats what they said on the tannoy...difficult to determine who was winning as 45 min race and driver changes...it says diff on tsl....but very impressive lap times.

You were correct Jon, Liam posted this on the RX8OC:

"Well, Combe was exciting!

Good points:
1st in class and 4th overall
No more oil leak (yay!)
Brakes worked well
Fantastic circuit
Great weather

Bad points:
Fluked the win with a well-timed pit stop
Battery isolator turned the car off 6 times, which sometimes enabled DSC
Car felt down on power and a little hesitant during the last few laps (suspect heat related, or all those restarts)
Pushed too hard for much of the race - mistakes follow (big and small)
My experimental driver ventilation system was ineffective

Comedy moment was being interviewed by a commentator "live" during my pit stop and cutting him off when the clock hit 1:00

Fastest lap was a couple of 1:19.2 in the early stages of the race."

Again, I have to say that is extremely impressive from a standard engine, albeit stripped out shell and uprated suspension. Especially so, as Combe is more suited to power, rather than handling. Liam must've really exploited his exit speeds from the corners to be able to achieve sub 1.20's  8)

Given that the engine cut out 6 times during the race and Liam had to restart it each time (occasionally) losing places in the process), that's an even more impressive race result. Superb driving skills on display in the video. There is clear evidence of the superior cornering of the RX-8 versus other cars in the race, but with a lack of punch coming out of the corners, allowing other cars to pull a gap. Several times Liam seemed to have to brake extra hard on corner entry to avoid slamming into the back of the car in front. To a lesser extent, this is a familiar experience to me on trackdays  :(

re japi

Yes, car goes really hard in corners, but does need some power... But that dude can drive :)
Power is nothing without control. Weight is enemy of performance, handling and braking.
