Waterless Coolants ??

Hi,

Just wondered if anybody has experience of using water-less coolant products such as Evans http://www.evanscoolants.co.uk/all-performance-products.html
in an FD3s ??

I understand the cooling system works hard in an FD3s, so through this may help.

Normal water/coolent works fine, you can get a product called \'water wetter\' which I know some people have run but if you are serious about cooling you would simply do a proper coolent flush and get a better radiator (no old brittle plastic end caps!)

Using waterless coolants you have to make sure there is no water in there at all to make full
Use of its effects. This can be done by filling and draining the system A couple of times. Supposed to give 10% better cooling from what I remember, but normal coolant water mix works just fine, and is a lot cheaper than the waterless stuff.

I looked into this a little while back and did some research.
 
Seems the waterless coolant is mostly Polypropylene Glycol with an added surfacant (detergent if you like) that acts as a wetter.  As a pure mix (100%) polypropylene, it has only half the Heat Capacity of water, but is less viscous.
 
It\'s largely non toxic - so that\'s a plus point.  It will also work fine in a mix with water - a 50% mix with water gives 95% of the Heat Capacity of water alone, but gives freeze protection down to 30 below or better, boiling point to over 120, so it\'s a good replacement for the pink stuff.  It will also lower the surface tension of the water by over 50%, and reduce it\'s viscosity, which will aid heat transfer through the coolant.
 
As a waterless coolant there is some mixed results on the internet forums - some people swear by it, as you don\'t need a pressurized system, and some say it runs too hot (and it will run hotter - the PG won\'t boil till 188 C but that could be a bit too high for some components of the engine.
 
Good flow rates in the coolant system would probably keep the temps down.

Good info above but from a practical side I used the Evans coolant in my Corolla + 3SGTE as the turbo was very close to the back of the rad and it was suffering from localised boiling as a result. Helped to cure the porblem in that instance.
 
I then used it in my 4AGE + Rotrex SC in a se7en style kit car and it ran with no problem and was very stable in all conditions. I could raise some eyebrows by removing the cap even after a run on the dyno and there would be a slight hiss as the system ran around 2-3 PSi with the non-aqeuous stuff.
 
In a well maintained coolant system running in normal conditions you shouldn\'t have any problems with water/coolant mix. There may be occasions or extreme circumstances where the higher boiling point of the non-aqeuous coolant could offer some benefits.

I\'m using Evans in a RX8 engine fitted to an MX5.  The car is used for short journeys and gets up to normal operating temperature quicker than a water-only coolant. A low-psi cap is used.

It costs a few quid but doesn\'t need to be changed.

I know of quite a few Track cars out there running Evans with good results, dont know if its necessary for a street car
