Added to my list of problems, i\'ve noticed that when you turn the key to ON, the centre console display shows up all the symbols including the fuel light, However when the car is running it does not show the fuel light even though on the dashboard the gauge is in the red.

Anyone got any ideas as to why it doesn\'t come on when the car is running?

Thanks

Could be a faulty connection? Although if i\'m honest i don\'t know just trying to help :)

The \'lamp test\' function is wired through diodes to most of the bulbs in the warning cluster - so it only checks that the bulbs are working when you crank the car. The hazard and fog lights I don\'t think are covered by the test - but would need to confirm that.

What it doesn\'t test is whether the senders are working.

There are 2 fuel senders - one is a basic switch - comes on when the fuel is virtually out - the other is a variable resistor which feeds the fuel gauge - so the two displays don\'t share the same sender - hence once can work without the other working.

Most likely it\'s corrosion on the 4 way connector in the boot - lift your carpet and look for the black wire going into the metal plate - follow it back to a white 4 way connector - unplug that - check/clean the contacts and plug it back in - may well fix your problem :)

The following link is for TurboII - but the fuel pump installation is the same - shows you where to look:

cheers for the replies, ill check the connector, not the end of the world if it doesnt come on as its hard to miss the gauge and seeing as my mx5 doesnt have a fuel light its something i check :)
