hi all again .. im only a 2nd day owner and i dont know if its me scaring my self or what. after polishing it today i fired it up and let it warm up for around 10mins, i went for a drive and gave it another 5 mins before i try to push the car... all was ok but iv got a problem with the fuel cutting.. im not worried about that as im changing the fuel filter tomorrow.. the main thing that was scaring me was when i came to park up the FD and stop the engine and got out and was walking to my work car to get some tools to do some work on the car again.. but i heard some water chucking sound and it happen a few times.. im thinking its the engine cooling down and the thermostat is open and water is still going round to cool it down.. but i aint sure so i best ask why. its kinda sound loud to me ... as i said its my 2nd day of owning it and im a new boy in town so some info on if this is rite or not... i will be changing the coolant soon aswell as the thermostat at the same time.. i also wanted to know what kinda coolant is best to use?

Hi there, does it sound more like dripping or ticking? If its ticking then its the exhaust and turbo cooling down.

With regards to coolent, make sure it says its ok for aluminium engines

rust

it dose sound like ticking but also splashing aswell... i do think its the coolant thats making the sound.. because i heard the overflow tank filling up or pulling water out.... im confused.... help........:(

Perhaps put some cardboard under your car overnight, if you find any coloured splashes its coolent leaking and you can see where from etc.

Is the car using coolent at all?

rust

thats a brilaint idea man. will do that tonight.

im gonna buy some Coolant tomorrow and chang it, as i dunno when was the last time its was changed.. im trying to play the game safe here as i really want to enjoy the car before i start modding it.

Yeah, always upgrade bits way past what is needed, there is a radtec rad on the for sale section at the moment, would suggest you look at cooling, its usually the ancileries like the rad or fueling that take out the engine, the cars are getting old now, I would suggest looking at ignition (the HT leads do fail and degrade, I got a better increase in power when I changed mine) check the fueling and replace the fuelpump, also give it a good service and sort the fluids :)

this week im gonna try target on the fuel fiilter and the coolant.. i bought some NGK spark plug leads.. so will stick them on.. i think maybe next week i will maybe try fit some time to chang the gearbox oil too. i didnt get the chance to buy the gearbox oil...

when ever i buy a car back home.. i always give it around 500-700 pounds of fresh parts before i think the car is okay to drive.. but as its my first Rotary i aint sure on what should come first so i guess the fuel and coolant is top at the moment..

i got this starbo turbo timer but i cant seem to work it out.. its got power but i cant set anything on it.. and i see some cables and plug thats not pluged in and cant see where it go.. confused...

Just take it slow and check everything over, don\'t forget with gearbox oil to make sure you undo the top bolt first before you undo the drain bolt at the bottom, else when you drain the oil out the bottom hole and the top bolt doesn\'t move you have a gearbox with no oil and no way to refill!

Ask lots of questions on here and check out some of the FAQs and you will be fine, I might also suggest you look for a \'fumoto oil drain valve\' which replaces the sump bolt with a tap, which makes oil changes eaaaasy, I don\'t even need to jack my car up to change the oil anymore :)

rust

yeah i cant rush checking over things.. i have to try make time for all this as im self empolyed and work all over the country... so when ever i dont work im on the car to see what i can do, gf rather me spend time on the car than go out and wast money on stuff i dont need ;) so im more than welcome to spend the time on it..

fumoto oil drain valve i will look in to that mate.. thanks for letting me know.

i feel a bit of a pain for asking so many newbie questions.. but i guess this is what the forum is all about... ( sharing ;) )

got a question for you guys.......

i started my car up today after filling it up with coolant yesterday......left it runnign for 10mins then noticed there was a coolant leak coming from my engine (somewhere)......so left it for a while longer then took her out for a blast........came back left her running for another few mins and no leak

no coolant warning light either!!! where could it be coming from!!? any ideas!!!?

its got MOT today so when its up on the ramp ill get him to have a look.......first time this has happened!!! STRANGE

My turbo II had a leak on the block to heater matrix hose, its at the back near to the spark plugs (well it is on mine, guessing its the same) it was just a slow drip, you might find that the heat of the run re-sealed up the hose etc

Yeah ask to check things over, take a cloth and pat on any wet parts, if the fluid is blue/pink its coolent rather than just water off the road etc, also take the time to check around for any obvious oil leaks :)

Sometimes it\'s not a coolant leak - but maybe an air pocket / bubble in the coolant system.

During normal operation, coolant will be pushed into the expansion tank if overfilled, and likewise on a cool down, it will be pulled back from the expansion tank into the system to top it up.

This only works if:

1)  The Rad/filler cap or AST pressure cap is working properly (Some 7\'s have just the one cap, some have 2 - filler and AST)

2)  There isn\'t an air pocket in the system - when filling, make sure heater matrix is on full (so the valves are open), and ideally jack the front of the car up to allow air pockets to come to the caps so you can \'burp\' it.
