Hey Guys,

Was fitting a new momo wheel to my rex the other day, and decided to take some pics.....although i missed out some pics as the camera was playing up, im hoping this guide will help the many who wish to tackle fitting a new steering wheel themselves, whilst maintaining a working horn :wiggle.

Getting the horn to work.

- Right, so i have a 95 FD with NO airbag, the steering wheel of choice was the MOMO Tuner in black, 350mm in size. The stock efini wheel measures 380mm so i didnt want to go to small, as the smaller you go the harder steering becomes, so 350mm is perfect, now i can actually fit my knees under it too! :InLove

- Ok so to remove the stock wheel, you simply pull from the corners of the efini horn centre and it will just pull out as so.

- Disconnect the horn clip. Now unscrew the 3 screws in the pic and the middle nut by using a 177mm socket, use an extension if necessary.

- Wiggle the wheel out and You will be left with this (or something similar i am hoping). Pull the top plastic cowel of gently, then get on your knees....remove the three screws from underneath the lower plastic coweling and it should pull off.

- Right, the plug for the horn connector is a problem as it is too long to allow the new MOMO hub to go on, so what i did is removed the rotating white disc that the plug is attached to, which exposed the solder connections for the three wires in the top left hand corner. White Wire, Brown Wire and Green Wire with red streak.
I do not have pics of this part but its very straight forward. Using a mulitmeter, test the connections of the three wires to see which one is the horn wire. When i tested them, the brown and green one were dead and the white one was the one with current, so this is our horn wire.

- Here i replaced the plastic disc cover without the white horn plug disc, and used a red splicing connector to splice into the white wire....then in the other section of the connector i used a black length of speaker wire. I do not think it matters which wire you use for this, as long as it can carry 12v.

- At the end of the black wire, i stripped and crimped a female connector onto the end.

-Now fit the hub. If using a momo hub you will have a triangle that says top on the face, make sure this faces to the top. Once in, secure the hub by screwing the 17mm bolt back on to torque (Rx7 is 40nm i believe), and make sure you put the rubber sleeve that comes with the hub, over the hub, youll kick yourself if you fit your wheel then realise you left it off lol :Thumbs-up

-Now what im using for my connector is my sisters hair clip (she will be angry if she finds out lol). As in the pic, cut alone the 2 black lines (sorry they came out rubbish, look close), we will only be using the thin part of the clip. This will be used to make our connection to the back of our MOMO Hub.

- Make sure you sand it down so that bare metal is showing on both ends so it makes a nice connection. connect one end to the female connector and use electrical tape to secure. If you have access to a solder iron, do that for a more secure connection. Now give it a sharp bend towards you so that it will push pressure against the back of the hub so it stays touching.

- Using the factory screw and a washer i found laying around i screwed the clip onto the factory mount, making sure that *The end of the clip touches the gold ring* on the back of the hub....if the clip touches any other part of the hub the horn will go on forever lol :Giggle

-Now here you can see the clip is bent so as to allow pressure constantly against the hub, and does not impede other moving parts. So now we have successfully made our horn connection to our hub.

To wire the horn, use the image below as reference. The wire coming from the hub goes to the live blade on the horn. And you need to attach an earth wire from the earth blade on the horn, to the blade on the momo horn ring which is supplied. At this point place the horn ring into the centre of the hub (it will be obvious which way to fit it as it only fits in snug one way, use pic for ref). And holding the ring there test the horn, it should work. Do not test the horn without touching the ring on the hub as then it will not work as the ring is not eartherd.

- Holding the ring in place, push the horn into the ring and it should snap into place. Place the steering wheel over the hub and horn, pushing against the ring, then place the bolt bezel over the wheel and screw in the allen bolts to the wheel. Job done!! :cheers

Now before you replace the cowling back on, take it for a test drive, make sure the wheel is secure and theres nothing obstructing its movement. Also fully lock the wheel to the left and the right then test the horn to make sure under maximum movement, the horn connector remains where it should.

If successful replace cowling and happy days! :3gears-rh admire your work :D

With the 350mm tuner i found the steering was very solid and secure, and felt really responsive. Highly reccommended.

A hair clip doesnt have to be used. You can use anything, just as long as theres a clean connection and you can mount it securely.

Hope this helps :)
